Gong, Herons soar past Knights 8-2

ASTON, Pa.-William Smith College first-year Julianna Gong matched a pair of single-game records as the Herons cruised to an 8-2 victory over Neumann in an United Collegiate Hockey Conference contest at IceWorks this evening. With its fifth straight win, William Smith is now 12-7-0 overall this season and 8-2-0 in conference play.
 
Gong recorded a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. She was the first Heron to score four goals in a game since Julia Mings scored four goals on Jan. 12, 2019. Gong's six points were the most by a Heron since Taylor Morash had six on Jan. 14, 2018. Senior Gina Scibetta added four points on two goals and two assists. Three other Herons finished with multi-point games. Sophomore Amanda Aalto started in goal and made 26 saves as she earned her fourth win of the season.
 
Kyleigh Prance and Nicole Turner scored for the Knights (9-10-0, 6-4-0). Helen Cooney played all 60 minutes in goal for Neumann and made 48 saves.
 
Scibetta opened the scoring at the 16:30 mark of the first period. She wristed a shot from the slot past Cooney for her ninth goal of the season. First-year Mia LaPlante and Gong were credited with assists on the goal. Three minutes later, Gong notched her first goal of the game. She deked around a defender and snapped a shot into the back of the net. Senior Kate Klimaszewski and Scibetta were credited with assists on the goal. With her second point of the game, Scibetta raised her career total to 100 points. She is the first Heron to hit the 100-point plateau.
 
The Knights broke up the shutout bid at the 3:54 mark of the second period. Turner banged home a rebound for her first goal of the season. Claudia Trionfo and Alana Lamplugh were credited with assists on the goal.
 
One minute later, junior Alison Weiss scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal. She forced a turnover at the blue line and fired a shot past Cooney. Her sixth goal of the season was unassisted. Gong extended William Smith's lead to three goals at the 9:41 mark of the middle period. Her ninth goal of the season was assisted by Scibetta. Gong completed her hat trick with three minutes left in the second period. She blasted a shot from the left faceoff circle past Cooney. Senior Emily Martino and Klimaszewski notched assists on Gong's 10th goal of the season.
 
Just over a minute into the third period, Scibetta gave William Smith a 6-1 lead. She flipped a loose puck past Cooney for her 10th goal of the season. Gong and first-year Annika Paletzki were credited with assists on the goal.
 
Thirty seconds later, Kyleigh Prance notched her third goal of the season. Emma Paton and Syd Ladwig were awarded assists.
 
Gong and junior Julia Mings rounded out the scoring for William Smith with power-play tallies. Gong's team-leading 11th goal of the season was assisted by Martino and Paletzki. Just over two minutes later, Mings pocketed her sixth goal of the season off a feed from first-year Liza Diffley.
 
The Herons finished the game with a 56-28 edge in shots on goal. William Smith was 4-for-7 on the power play and Neumann was 0-for-6 with the extra skater.
 
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, Feb. 1, when they travel to take on Manhattanville. Faceoff in Rye, N.Y., is scheduled for 7 p.m.
