Dimitrakopoulou posts 3rd straight double-double

TROY, N.Y.—Junior guard Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou posted her third straight double-double tonight, but William Smith College fell at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute 65-59 in the first round of the Liberty League Women's Basketball Tournament. The native of Athens, Greece, scored 13 points and grabbed a team-high 10 rebounds for the Herons.

Dimitrakopoulou averaged 12.7 points and 10.3 rebounds over the final three games of the season which were all played in the past five days. Sophomore Stella Davis scored a team-high 14 points, sinking half of the team's eight 3-pointers. Sophomore Olivia Parisi contributed 11 points and nine rebounds. Seniors Emma Gallagher and Annaliese Schreder added nine points and eight points, respectively.

The Engineers (17-9) got a game-high 21 points from senior Sam Krumbhaar on 8-of-15 shooting. Senior Celia Tomlinson had a double-double on 17 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Ines Ortea and first-year Heather Converse each had nine points.

William Smith jumped out to a 6-0 lead and never trailed in the first half. Converse tied the game at 11 with a traditional 3-point play late in the first quarter, but Dimitrakopoulou made a layup and Davis followed with a 3-pointer to give the visitors a 16-11 lead after one.

With about two minutes to go in the half, the Herons grabbed their biggest lead of the game on Davis' third 3-pointer, which gave William Smith a 32-23 lead. After back-to-back buckets by the Engineers, Gallagher capped the first half scoring with a layup, sending the Herons into the break with a 34-27 lead.

William Smith shot 58.3% from the floor in the second quarter, including 4-of-6 from beyond the arc.

The Engineers shot just 33.3% in the first half, but upped their production in the second half, shooting 45.5% after the break while limiting the Herons to 20.6% shooting.

RPI outscored William Smith 7-2 in the opening minutes of the third quarter and briefly took the lead in the final minute. First-year Lauren DeVaney tied the game at 43 with a pair of free throws to close the frame's scoring.

Ortea opened the fourth quarter scoring, but Parisi answered with a pair of free throws, deadlocking the score at 45. The Herons pushed into the lead one last time on a 3-pointer from Dimitrakopoulou. The lead was gone two minutes later when an Ortea steal led to a fast-break layup and a 51-50 RPI lead. It was part of an 8-0 run that gave Rensselaer a five-point lead with four minutes to play.

With under two minutes to go, William Smith closed the gap to three on a pair of free throws by Dimitrakopoulou. The Herons were 8-for-8 from the line in the second half. After Krumbhaar missed a jumper, William Smith had a possession with a chance to get within one or tie, but the Herons' shot was off the mark. Krumbhaar made a clutch 3-pointer on the next trip down the floor and the Engineers' closed out the win by making all four of their free throw attempts in the final 20 seconds.

William Smith finished the year with a program record 192 3-pointers made, 20 more than the standard established by the 1991-92 Herons. Davis led the long range efforts with 67 triples, tied for fourth on the team's single season list with Sasha Borenstein's 2012-13 total.

Parisi was the team's top scorer and rebounder, producing 400 points and 224 rebounds. Dimitrakopoulou and Gallagher each doled out a team-high 62 assists. Gallagher also led the team in steals with 31.

William Smith finished the season with a 14-12 record, the Herons' fourth straight winning season.
