GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College basketball team made 11 3-pointers, including three in overtime, to pick up a key Liberty League win tonight, outlasting Union College 75-64. The Herons remain in fifth place in the conference standings while keeping the Dutchwomen in seventh place, one spot out of the conference tournament.
William Smith's long-range fireworks were sparked by sophomore
Stella Davis and senior
Annaliese Schreder. Davis canned a career-high matching five triples and finished with 17 points. Schreder posted a career-high 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including a career-high four treys. She was also 3-of-4 at the line. Junior
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou added 15 points, seven rebounds and a game-high six assists. Sophomore
Olivia Parisi grabbed a team-high 10 boards, leading the Herons to a 45-34 advantage on the glass.
William Smith (11-8, 7-5) shot 40% from the floor for the game, 40.7% from beyond the arc, and 66.7% at the free throw line.
Union (8-10, 5-7) had two players reach double figures, led by Amber Raisner's 19 points and four assists. Elly Vaughn added a double-double on 17 points and 10 rebounds. The Dutchwomen shot 37.7 percent overall, just 21.1% from deep and 63.6% at the line.
William Smith held the lead for more than 39 minutes tonight, expanding its advantage to double digits three times in the second half. However, Union wouldn't let the Herons break the contest open, holding the home team scoreless over the final four and a half minutes of regulation. Raisner fueled the game-tying comeback with six points and Laura Vinton tied the score at 59 with 1.5 seconds remaining.
William Smith called time out and advanced the ball across midcourt. Dimitrakopoulou got off a contested 3 at the buzzer, but it was off the mark. The Dutchwomen struggled from the field for most of the night, but connected on 53.8% of their shots in the fourth quarter.
In overtime, William Smith won the jumpball and Schreder opened the scoring with a 3-pointer. She added to the lead by making 1-of-2 at the line just over a minute later. After Vaughn hit a jumper to make it a 2-point game, Davis swished a 3-ball for a 66-61 lead.
Union misfired on its next possession and senior
Emma Gallagher corralled the rebound for the Herons. Gallagher earned a trip to the line on William Smith's offensive possession, but missed both shots. Parisi grabbed the offensive board to keep the ball in the Herons' end and Schreder made it pay off with another 3-pointer.
William Smith closed out the victory by making all six of its free throws in the final 90 seconds.
The Herons will play the fourth game of a five-game homestand at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 7, when they welcome conference co-leader St. Lawrence (14-5, 10-2) to Bristol Gym.
