GENEVA, N.Y.—Sophomore
Stella Davis made a career-high seven 3-pointers to lead the William Smith College basketball team to a 70-44 Liberty League win over Clarkson University in Bristol Gym today. The long range performance is tied for the fifth most 3-pointers in a game by a Heron, two off the record.
Davis led all scorers with 23 points. She was 8-of-10 from the floor, including 7-of-8 from deep. Davis' .875 3-point percentage is the second highest by a William Smith player with at least seven 3s in a game. She made her first four shots from distance before missing one midway through the second quarter.
William Smith (13-8, 9-5) never trailed in the first half, carrying its biggest lead of the opening 20 minutes into the locker room at halftime, 33-23. The Herons shot 33.3% in the first half, sinking 4-of-10 from deep in the first quarter. Davis connected on 5-of-6 from beyond the arc and took a game-high 15 points into the break.
The first five minutes of the second half belonged to Clarkson (7-13, 3-11), which used a 15-2 run to claim a 38-35 lead. Junior Hannah Earl led the charge with six of her 14 points. The Herons weathered the run and reclaimed the lead with an 11-0 run to end the quarter. Sophomore
Olivia Parisi's layup with about three minutes to go in the third put William Smith in front 39-38, a lead they didn't relinquish. She logged her eighth double-double of the season on 14 points and 12 rebounds.
The Herons dominated the fourth quarter, outscoring the Knights 24-6 including the final 14 points of the game. The Herons shot 53.3% from the floor over the final 10 minutes, while limiting Clarkson to 8.3% shooting (1-of-12).
In addition to Parisi, William Smith also got double-doubles from junior
Stavriana Dimitrakopoulou and first-year
Lauren DeVaney. The former posted 10 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. The latter had 13 points and 12 boards. The Herons dominated on the glass, outrebounding the Knights 56-36.
Clarkson was led by junior Emma Buonanno's 16 points and seven rebounds.
William Smith, which has won four in a row, will make its final road trip of the season next weekend. The Herons will visit Rensselaer (12-8, 8-5) Friday, Feb. 14. William Smith is fourth in the Liberty League standings, a half game ahead of the Engineers.
Clarkson's four-game road trip continues at Ithaca (15-5, 11-2) on Friday.
