Herons down Colonels for 8th straight win

WILKES-BARRE, Pa.-The William Smith College hockey team scored five goals in the second period as it cruised to a 9-2 victory over Wilkes at the Toyota SportsPlex this afternoon. With their eighth straight victory, the Herons are now 15-7-0 with an 11-2-0 mark in the United Collegiate Hockey Conference.
 
Five different Herons shared game-high honors with three points. Junior Jules Kennedy and senior Gina Scibetta led the way with a pair of goals each. First-year Mia LaPlante had three assists. Junior Olivia Williams started in goal and made 13 saves.
 
Julie Patterson and Ashley Murry scored for the Colonels (4-13-1, 3-8-1). Ally Jolly started in goal and made 51 saves.
 
The Herons dominated the opening period, outshooting Wilkes 21-1. First-year Liza Diffley opened the scoring at the 3:28 mark of the first period. She fired a shot from the point into the back of the net for her first collegiate goal. Sophomore Emma Duffey was credited with an assist. Scibetta doubled William Smith's lead with her 13th goal of the season at the 17:24 mark of the period. She cleaned up her own rebound and flipped the loose puck over Jolly. Kennedy and first-year Laura Hill were awarded assists on the goal.
 
Just over three minutes into the second period, Kennedy scored what would prove to be the game-winning goal. She banged home a rebound from the low slot for her 10th goal of the season. Hill and junior Julia Mings were awarded helpers on the goal. Two minutes later, senior Kate Klimaszewski notched her third goal of the season. She one-timed a shot from the left faceoff circle into the upper corner of the cage. First-year Julianna Gong and senior Emily Martino were credited with assists on the goal. Mings extended William Smith's lead to five goals at the 16:03 mark of the middle period. LaPlante and Annika Paletzki were credited with assists on the power-play goal. Two minutes later, Scibetta pocketed her second goal of the game and 14th of the season. She deked around a defender and slipped a backhanded shot past Jolly. LaPlante and Paletzki were awarded assists on the goal. Kennedy added her second goal of the game 35 seconds later. Mings and Hill notched assists on the goal.
 
Wilkes broke up the shutout bid on Ashley Murry's second goal of the season. At the 7:48 mark of the third period, she rifled a shot past Williams. Quinn Rodefeld had an assist on the goal. Just past the 13 minute mark, the Colonels added a second goal. Patterson's short-handed goal was assisted by Abigail Barcless.
 
Gong and junior Marykate Martino added insurance goals for William Smith late in the third period. Gong's 12th goal of the season was assisted by LaPlante and Scibetta. With two points in today's game, Gong now has 31 on the season, matching the Herons' rookie scoring mark. Martino's first goal of the season was assisted by Taylor Ettore and Emily Franciszkowicz.
 
William Smith finished the game with a 60-15 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 2-for-5 on the power play and the Colonels were 0-for-3.
 
William Smith will be back in action next Sunday, Feb. 16, when it hosts No. 4 Elmira at The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
