Game Recap: William Smith Field Hockey | | Ken DeBolt

Saints rally past Herons

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team carried a 1-0 lead into halftime, but visiting St. Lawrence University scored twice in the second half to escape McCooey Field with a 2-1 Liberty League victory.

The Saints' Mckenzie Haberl used her speed to produce the game-winning goal. She received a pass 40-yards from the goal, sprinted into the circle, splitting a pair of defenders and slipped a shot under the pads of Heron goalie Stephanie Stone in the 46th minute. It was her team-leading 13th goal of the season.

Rebecca Mantione had the best chance to tie down the stretch. On a William Smith penalty corner, she fired a shot through traffic that appeared headed for the lower left corner of the cage, but goalie Lucy Adiutori kicked it wide of the post. The Herons played the final 101 seconds without a goalie to try to score the equalizer, but SLU withstood the Heron pressure.

The Saints (8-5, 2-2) finished the game with a 15-7 advantage in shots, including a 9-2 edge in the second half. SLU had five penalty corners to two for William Smith (4-8, 0-4).

After a scoreless first quarter, William Smith seized the lead early in the second. On a scramble in front of the goal, Mackenzie Wodka had a shot saved and Cora Nagle fired the rebound past Adiutori, but Eva Drummond bailed her out with a defensive save on the goal line. That was fouled by a whistle that awarded a penalty stroke to the Herons. Lauren Jackson fired a shot that Adiutori managed to get a blocker on, but she only redirected it into the top of the cage. It was Jackson's second goal of the season.

At the half, shots were even at five apiece.

Late in the third quarter, St. Lawrence broke up the shut out. Haberl slipped a shot past Stone, but Kate Barilla made a defensive save on the goal line. The rebound was collected by Morgan Misiaszek, who sticked it home to tie the game.

Adiutori played all 60 minutes making four saves. Stone played the first 48 minutes for the Herons, making three stops. Kristen McCormick also made three saves in just over 10 and a half minutes of relief work.

William Smith will be back in action at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 17 when the Herons visit Skidmore (6-8, 1-3).
