RPI slips past Hobart 2-1

TROY, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer team was edged by Rensselaer 2-1 in a tightly contested Liberty League match at ECAV Stadium this afternoon. The Statesmen are now 6-6-1 overall this season and 3-3-1 in conference play.

Frederick Madsen had Hobart's first major chance of the game, but his shot was blocked by a defender. Amad Miller opened the scoring in the 21st minute with his team-leading fifth goal of the season. Standing on the left goal post, he headed home a corner kick off a feed from August Martini.
Seven minutes later, the Engineers (9-2-2, 5-1-0) tied the game on Josh Gaudiano's seventh goal of the season. He thumped home a cross from Billy Chissoe.

RPI held a slight 5-4 edge in shots in the first half and each team earned three corner kicks.

The Engineers took control of the game in the second. Chissoe scored the game-winning goal in the 54th minute. He tapped a Gaudiano crossing pass across the goal line for his fourth goal of the season. RPI had several chances to add to their lead, including a wide-open look from Gaudiano in the final 10 minutes that was turned aside by Guillermo Castaneda Chang.

Castaneda Chang started and played all 90 minutes in goal for Hobart, making five saves. Luke Brezek made one save in 90 minutes of action in the RPI goal.

The Engineers finished the game with a 16-6 edge in shots and an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The Statesmen will be back in action on Wednesday, Oct. 20, when they welcome Buffalo State to Cozzens Field for a non-conference contest. The game is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. It will start a four-game homestand for Hobart.
