Game Recap: William Smith Soccer | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Keogh’s brace powers #6 Herons to Senior Day victory

GENEVA, N.Y.—William Smith College forward Julia Keogh scored twice as the sixth-ranked William Smith College soccer team cruised to a 3-0 victory over Rensselaer in a Liberty League contest on Cozzens Field this afternoon. Before today's game, Keogh and her 11 classmates celebrated their Senior Day.

With the victory, William Smith has won 11 straight games, including 10 shutouts. The Herons are now 12-1-1 overall this season and 7-0-0 in Liberty League play. The win clinched at least a share of the regular season title for William Smith.

Katrine Berg added a pair of assists for the Herons. Amanda Kesler played all 90 minutes in goal and made five saves as she notched her sixth shutout of the season.

Megan Wampner played all 90 minutes in goal for the Engineers (4-4-4, 1-3-2) and made six saves.

The Herons wasted little time jumping out to a 1-0 lead. In the sixth minute, Keogh slipped a shot into the lower right corner of the cage. Her 13th goal of the season was assisted by Ava Ruppersberger and Berg. Berg served a crossing pass into the 18-yard box that Ruppersberger flicked to Keogh at the penalty spot. William Smith continued to up the pressure, compiling 15 shots in the opening 45 minutes. In the 11th minute, Amanda Adams' shot from the top of the 18-yard box just missed the crossbar. In the 33rd minute, Berg had a shot off a free kick squeak past the right goal post.  In the 44th minute, Sarah Gray had a shot from a tight angle punched over the end line. Berg bent the ensuing corner kick into the attacking box.  Gray headed the shot past Wampner for her third goal of the season.

RPI had their best scoring chance of the game in the 55th minute. Erin Barns' shot from inside the 18-yard box was smothered by Kesler. Two minutes later, Barnes had a shot blocked by a William Smith defender

Keogh wrapped up the scoring with her Liberty League-best 14th goal of the season. She was tackled in the box by Meghan Huang. Keogh stepped up and buried the penalty kick goal in the left half of the cage. Her 14 goals this season are the most by a Heron since Krista Longo '16 had 14 goals in her senior season.

William Smith finished the game with a 30-10 edge in shots and an 11-5 advantage in corner kicks.

The Herons will wrap up their regular season with a two-game road trip. William Smith returns to the pitch next Saturday, Oct. 23, when it takes on Vassar. The game in Poughkeepsie is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
