HWS wins David Lee Arnoff Trophy

The Hobart and William Smith Colleges sailing team won the David Lee Arnoff Trophy on Seneca Lake this weekend, Oct. 16-17. It's the fifth-straight time the Colleges have won the trophy. In addition, William Smith sailors were in Cambridge, Massachusetts for the Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament.
 
HWS turned in a strong performance at the first home regatta of the season, placing three teams in the top 10.  On Saturday, racing was delayed until 11:15 due to storms rolling through the Geneva area. When racing began, sailors competed in winds ranging from 4-14 knots. Sunday saw a classic west wind ranging from 10-20 knots that kept the sailors on their toes.
 
The Colleges' top team turned in a dominating performance compiling 97 points on the weekend. The team won the regatta by 40 points. Will Murray and Frances Depke competed won A Division, finishing the weekend with 42 points. They were in the top 10 in all but two of the races, posting two victories on Saturday. Eli Gleason and Anna McBride were tied for second and B Division but were edged out due to the number of high place finishes. Gleason and McBride crossed the line in the top eight in all 12 races, including three second place finishes. Nicholas Sessions, Rachel Duggan, William Foox and Aaron Tsuchitori combined to finish second overall with 137 points. Session and Duggan were sixth in A Division with 82 points. They were in the top 10 in eight races placing second in the 10th and 12th races. Foox and Tsuchitori tied for second with Gleason and McBride and were awarded second place due to number of high-place finishes. Foox and Tsuchitori were in the top 10 in all 12 races and crossed the line first three times. Heather Kerns, Elizabeth Starck, Payton Kliesch, Tory Mileti, F. Stephen Martocci and Colin DuBose were ninth overall with 212 points. Kerns and Mileti competed in A Division, compiling 89 points. Starck and Kliesch split time as skippers and Martocci and Dubose split time as crew in B Division. They finished the weekend with 123 points.
 
In Cambridge, William Smith sailors finished sixth in a field of  16 teams at the Women's Atlantic Coast Tournament. The Herons finished the weekend with 228 points, six behind Boston University. Camille McGriff and Brook Wood sailed in B Division, compiling 106 points. They opened the weekend with a pair of first place finishes and crossed the line in the top-five a total of eight times. Ella Withington and Sarah Smith competed in A Division, posting 122 points on the weekend. They had 10 finishes in the top 10 and crossed the line second three times. The hosts, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, won the regatta with 132 points.
 
HWS will be back in action next weekend, Oct. 23-24, when it heads to St. Mary's City, Maryland, for the Coed Atlantic Coast Championship. William Smith sailors will head to New Haven, Connecticut for the Yale Women's regatta.
