Libby Maxwell scored with 11.5 seconds remaining in the second overtime to lift the William Smith field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at No. 15 Vassar this afternoon. It was her third goal of the season and first game winner.
The Brewers outshot the Herons 17-15, but William Smith outshot Vassar 8-1 in overtime. Penalty corners were even at 10 apiece, but the Herons took half of their corners in overtime compared to just one for the Brewers.
Maxwell's golden goal came on the final penalty corner of the day. She sent the inset to
Lea Mateo Medina to the left of the top of the circle. After touching the ball back into the circle, Mateo Medina unleashed a shot toward that Maxwell redirected.
William Smith dominated the first overtime, putting four shots on goal while allowing none, but Vassar withstood the pressure. The Herons had their best chance to score when they were awarded a penalty stroke in the 64th minute, but goalie Sarah Dumaresq stopped
Kate Barilla's shot. Three minutes later,
Rebecca Mantione nearly ended the game, but Heidi Compton came up with her second defensive save of the game for the Brewers. Early in the second overtime,
Cora Nagle had a great scoring chance, but her shot on the run hit the left post.
The Herons opened the scoring in the final minute of the first quarter.
Corinna Dorr picked the pocket of a Vassar defender near the 25-yard line. Her pass found
Sofia Pattillo open near the top of the Brewer's circle. Pattillo fed
Emily Leonard, who chipped a short shot past Dumaresq for her third goal of the season. Dumaresq finished with six saves.
William Smith took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a pair of first half saves by goalie
Stephanie Stone.
Vassar (11-4, 4-3) equalized in the 41st minute. The Brewers made a long cross from the right sideline to the back post, where Maggie Werner passed to Avery Bauman at the left post. She was able to flick a shot by
Kristen McCormick, who started the second half in goal for the Herons. McCormick played the second half and both overtime periods, making six saves.
William Smith (6-9, 2-5) will close out the season at home, hosting No. 8 Messiah (12-2) at noon on Saturday, Oct. 30.
