GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College soccer season came to a heart-breaking end this afternoon as St. Lawrence University escaped Cozzens Field with a 3-2 overtime victory. The Saints' Marvin Sibanda scored his second goal of the match just short of three minutes into overtime to clinch the Liberty League victory for the visitors.
The Statesmen began the day needing at least a tie or a Skidmore loss to clinch a spot in the six-team Liberty League Tournament, but the Thoroughbreds defeated Bard 4-0, leaving Hobart one-point outside of the playoffs.
Hobart got on the board first when
Matias Valenzuela Matic capitalized on a misplay by a Saints' defender. The Statesmen sent a high arcing volley deep into SLU's defensive zone. A Saints' defender tried to head the ball back to goalie Ben Woelfinger, but Valenzuela Matic beat him to the ball, chipping it over the keep for a 1-0 11th minute lead. It was his fourth goal of the season.
Sibanda equalized in the 29th minute, firing a shot into the lower right corner of the Hobart goal. The game remained tied going into halftime.
In the 54th minute, Max Mogul scored on a strike into the same corner to giving St. Lawrence (9-6-1, 5-3-1) the lead. Eleven minutes later, the Statesmen equalized on
Robbie Caron's first collegiate goal, a volley from the center of the penalty area to the upper left corner of the goal.
In an end-to-end overtime, Sibanda took the first shot, but it was blocked by the Hobart defense. At the other end of the field, Ahmad Miller saw his offering miss wide right. The Saints worked the ball back into the Hobart zone with Robert Reynolds finding Sibanda open 8 yards off the touchline on the left side of the box. He drilled his shot into the left side of the goal for his ninth tally of the year.
Woelfinger earned the win with two saves.
Guillermo Castaneda Chang recorded five saves for Hobart.
The Statesmen ended the season with an 8-7-2 overall record and a 3-4-2 mark against the conference.
