POTSDAM, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by Potsdam 2-1 in a non-conference contest at Maxcy Arena this afternoon. The Herons are now 1-1-0 on the season.
Julianna Gong scored the Herons' goal.
Annie Hauser started in goal for William Smith and made 25 saves in her collegiate debut.
Sarah Barrett and Allie Banas scored for the Bears (1-1-0). Ellie Zurfluh played all 60 minutes in goal, making 32 saves in the victory.
Neither team found the back of the net in the first period. The Herons peppered Zurfluh with 16 shots in the first period, but were unable to convert on a pair of power plays. Hauser stopped all six shots she faced at the opposite end of the rink.
Potsdam took the lead just over two minutes into the second period. Barrett ripped a shot into the net from the right side of the crease over the goalie's shoulder. Stephanie Dunlap and Emily Burke were awarded assists on the goal.
Annabel Ziskin nearly tied the game early in the third, but her shot was robbed by the glove of the goalie.
Banas gave Potsdam a 2-0 lead at the 5:41 mark of the third period. She fired a snapshot from the high slot past Hauser for her first goal of the season.
Julianna Gong broke up the shutout bid at the 13:33 mark of the third period with a power-play goal. She redirected a shot from Ziskin past Zurfluh.
Emily Martino was credited with the secondary assist on the goal.
Kayla Ketchabaw nearly tied the game with five minutes left, but her shot hit the goal post.
William Smith finished the game with a 33-27 edge in shots on goal. The Herons were 1-for-3 on the power play and Potsdam was 0-for-2 with the extra attacker.
William Smith will be back in action next weekend when it opens NEHC play. The Herons will welcome Southern Maine and Salem State to The Cooler for a pair of games. Faceoff against the Huskies is scheduled for Friday at 7 p.m. The game against the Vikings will begin at 4 p.m.
