GENEVA, N.Y.—The third-ranked William Smith College soccer team cruised past John Jay 9-0 in a NCAA tournament first round game played on Cozzens Field this morning. Eight different players recorded a goal as the Herons notched their 16th consecutive win.
Seneca Blakely-Armitage led the way for William Smith (17-1-1) with two goals and an assist.
Janne Knieke and
Marjorie Plants also had a goal and an assist in the victory.
Amanda Kesler started and played the 58 minutes in goal for the Herons. She did not face a shot.
Kirsten Nelson played the final 32 minutes in goal and made one save.
Lexi Reidenbaker played 90 minutes in goal for the Bloodhounds (9-6-0) and made eight saves.
William Smith seized the momentum right from the opening whistle.
Julia Keogh opened the scoring 42 seconds into the game. She collected a leading pass from
Sheila McQuillen, broke into the box and fired a shot past Reidenbaker. Keogh's 20th goal of the season matched William Smith's single-season record.
Amanda Adams gave William Smith a 2-0 lead. She chipped a shot from inside the 18-yard box past the goalie for her seventh goal of the season. In the 33rd minute,
Katrine Berg made it a three-goal game with her third goal of the season. She collected a pass from Blakely-Armitage and fired a shot into the lower-left corner of the cage. In the 41st minute, Knieke scored on a free-kick from 23-yards out. Off of a quick whistle, she got the Bloodhound defense napping and curled a shot into the left half of the cage.
Emma Faso wrapped up the scoring in the first half with her fourth goal of the year. She collected a pass from
Evan Amendum and blasted a shot into the back of the net.
In the 47th minute, Blakely Armitage's seventh goal of the season extended the lead to six goals. Her strike 1:18 into the second half was assisted by
Emma Kirts.
Marjorie Plants scored her first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally, in the 67th minute. Ten minutes later,
Mercedes Wiegel added her first collegiate goal off a feed from Plants. Blakely-Armitage rounded out the scoring with her eighth goal of the season. Knieke was credited with an assist on the goal.
The nine goals by the Herons were a William Smith record in the NCAA tournament record. The Herons previous records for goals scored in a NCAA game was six. They did that three times, most recently against Lancaster Bible in 2011.
William Smith finished the game with a 35-2 edge in shots on goal and a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
The Herons will be back in action tomorrow, No. 13, when they take on Hamilton in a second round match. The Continentals edged Johnson and Wales 3-2 this afternoon. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. on Cozzens Field.
