Heron soccer heads to Scranton

The third-ranked William Smith College soccer team will face fourth-ranked Misericordia in an NCAA tournament third round game hosted by the University of Scranton in Scranton, Pennsylvania, on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 3:30 p.m.
 
No. 18 Scranton will face No. 1 TCNJ in the other third round game on Saturday at Weiss Field. The advancing teams will meet on Sunday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m. for a spot in the semifinals.
 
Tickets are $6 for general admission, $3 for students and seniors and $2 for children ages 3-12. Children under three will be admitted free. Fans unable to make the game can follow the action online with Live Stats and Video through Scranton's website.
 
All spectators must be masked indoors regardless of vaccination status. For outdoor athletics events, unvaccinated individuals must remain masked when social distancing is not possible. Masks are required for all individuals in restrooms at outdoor athletic venues. In accordance with university policy and for the safety of student-athletes and fans, no pets are allowed at University of Scranton athletics facilities.
 
The Herons bring an 18-1-1 overall record into the weekend. William Smith topped John Jay 9-0 in the first round and defeated No. 17 Hamilton 2-1 in the second round to advance to Saturday's game. The Herons, who are making a record 31st appearance in the NCAA tournament, have advanced to the sectional round in six straight seasons.
 
Julia Keogh leads William Smith with 21 goals and 48 points. She entered the tournament ranked ninth in the nation in total goals and 12th in total points. She is 13th in the nation in goals per game (1.06) and points per game (2.44). Sheila McQuillen is second on the team with 30 points on 10 goals and a team-best 10 assists. Amanda Kesler has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 15-1-0 with a 0.53 goals against average and an .855 save percentage.
 
Misericordia is 20-1-0 this season. The Cougars defeated Stevens 1-0 to earn the MAC Freedom conference's automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. Misericordia cruised past Bryn Athyn 11-0 in the first round and then dispatched No. 19 Middlebury 3-0 to advance to the third round. Emma Sweitzer leads the team with 54 points on 21 goals and 12 assists. Kaylee Sturans has 38 points on 15 goals and eight assists. Alexis Benedetto has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 19-1-0 with a 0.32 GAA and a .918 save percentage.
 
Saturday's game will be the fifth all-time meeting between William Smith and Misericordia. The Herons lead the all-time series 2-1-1.
