BOSTON, Mass.—The William Smith College hockey team was edged by UMass Boston 2-1 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at the Edward T. Barry Ice Rink this evening. The Herons are now 2-5-0 overall this season and 1-4-0 in NEHC play.
Brit Foster scored the goal for William Smith.
Annie Hauser started in goal and made 20 saves.
Two different players scored goals for UMass Boston (3-3-0, 3-2-0). Victoria Kennedy played all 60 minutes in goal and made 28 saves.
The Beacons opened the scoring at the 6:09 mark of the first period. Kelsey Ryan fired a shot from the point past Hauser for her third goal of the season. Jane Ann Drill was credited with an assist on the goal. William Smith tied the game at the 16:33 mark of the first period when Foster slipped a shot past Kennedy. Her third goal of the season was assisted by
Kayla Ketchabaw Both teams had chances down the stretch run of the first period, but the goalies stood tall and kept the game tied 1-1 at the first intermission.
Cailey Kozich scored the game-winning goal at the 5:27 mark of the second period. She forced a turnover at the William Smith blue line, beat two defenders and knocked the crucial shorthanded tally past Hauser. It was her third goal of the season. UMass Boston also hit a goal post late in the second period.
In the third period,
Emma Duffey had one of William Smith's best scoring chances. Her shot from the point cleanly beat Kennedy, but hit the right goal post.
The Herons finished the game with a 29-22 advantage in shots on goal. Neither team converted on the power play. William Smith was 0-for-6 and UMass Boston was 0-for-1 with the extra attacker.
William Smith will be back in action tomorrow, Nov. 20, when it takes on Johnson & Wales. Faceoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
