Berg’s OT strike seals comeback, sends #3 William Smith to quarterfinals

SCRANTON, Pa.—William Smith College defender Katrine Berg scored the game-winning goal with 3:15 remaining in the second overtime to secure a 5-4 come from behind victory for the third-ranked Herons over fourth-ranked Misericordia on Weiss Field this afternoon. With its 18th consecutive victory, William Smith is now 19-1-1 on the season and advanced to the quarterfinals for the third-straight season.

The Cougars conclude their season with a 20-2-0 overall record. The Herons will take on top-ranked The College of New Jersey on Sunday, Nov. 21, in the quarterfinal round at 3 p.m. The Lions defeated Scranton 3-1 earlier in the day.

Berg's game-winning tally was her fourth goal in as many games. She fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that redirected off of a Misericordia defender and into the lower left-hand corner of the cage. Her sister Julia Berg was credited with the assist on the game-winning tally.

Misericordia and William Smith entered the tournament with two of the nation's top offenses and today's game did not disappoint. The nine goals were the most in any of today's eight third round contests.

The Herons wasted little time scoring the game's first goal, a mere 56 seconds into the game.  Sheila McQuillen ran onto the end of an Ava Ruppersberger crossing pass and buried a right-footed shot into the back of the net. It was her 11th goal of the season.

The Cougars tied the game in the 10th minute. Maegan Allspach fired home a shot from 12 yards out into the right corner of the cage. Kaylee Sturans was credited with an assist on the goal. It was Allspach's fourth goal of the season. Misericordia took a 2-1 lead in the 28th minute. Michaela Fasolino bent a shot into the upper right corner of the cage. Her 13th goal of the season was assisted by Emma Sweitzer. The Cougars took a 3-1 lead into the halftime break thanks to Ally Waite's eighth goal of the season. Katie Field was credited with an assist on the goal.

In the 63rd minute, Julia Keogh notched her team-leading 22nd goal of the season to bring William Smith within a goal. She collected a through ball from McQuillen and chipped a right-footed shot over the Misericordia goalie. With the goal, Keogh now has 51 points on the season, surpassing BreLynn Nasypany's record for points in a season. Nasypanny had 49 points during her senior season in 2010. With the goal, Keogh also became just the eighth player in William Smith history to reach the 100-point plateau.
Less than two minutes later, Emma Sweitzer answered for Misericordia to extend the lead to 4-2. It was her 23rd goal of the season.

William Smith would not be deterred. Julia Berg scored her fourth goal of the season in the 67th minute to give the Herons a chance late in the game. With 10 seconds remaining in regulation, Seneca Blakely-Armitage fired a shot from just inside the 18-yard box. The arching shot was stopped by the Misericordia keeper, but the spin off of the crossbar caused the ball to bounce back towards the goal and across the goal line. The game-tying goal

After halftime, William Smith upped the pressure outshooting Misericordia 20-5 in the final 61:45 of the game. The Herons hit two crossbars and a goal post in the second half. Julia Keogh also had a shot hit the post in the first half.
