Yellowjackets use late charge to top Statesmen

ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The University of Rochester used a late run to break open an otherwise close game, pulling away from Hobart College for an 80-57 non-conference men's basketball victory in the Louis Alexander Palestra tonight.

Patrick Walker led the Statesmen with 11 points. Jackson Meshanic and Aidan Rodgers added 10 points apiece. Meshanic led Hobart with seven rebounds.

Brian Amabilino Perez paced four Yellowjackets in double digits scoring 23 points to go with a game-high 10 boards.

Three minutes into the game, Hobart took a 9-7 lead on a driving layup by Walker. Over the next seven minutes, Rochester outscored the visitors 17-5 to build a 10-point lead. The Yellowjackets were 6-of-9 shooting and made four steals during the run.

Carter Meshanic and Jackson Meshanic cut into that advantage with a 7-2 run. Carter scored five straight points for Hobart and then Jackson cracked the scoring column by draining a pair of free throws that made it a 34-29 game.

Rochester reclaimed its 10-point lead with the final five points of the half, including a traditional 3-point play with 0.8 seconds remaining by Ross Gang.

Hobart came out of the break on fire, scoring the first 12 points of the second half. Jackson Meshanic led the charge with seven points. Walker made two free throws to cap the run, giving the Statesmen a 41-39 lead. Mitchell Kershner ended UR's scoring drought three and a half minutes into the half.

The teams struggled to gain footing over the next five minutes with neither side able to gain more than a single possession lead. Ryan Lucey hit a triple to tie the game at 50 with under 12 minutes remaining. Gang led Rochester to six straight points, scoring on a driving layup, assisting on Kekoapookela McArdle's layup and then scoring on a hook shot to make it a 56-50 Rochester lead.

Jack Lesure sank a pair at the line to make it a four-point game, but the Yellowjackets countered with 17 straight points. Amabilino Perez led the decisive charge with nine points.

By the time Andrew Lynch made a 3-pointer to stop the run, Rochester was sitting on a comfortable 18-point lead with just two minutes to play.

Hobart shot 32.1% from the floor while Rochester shot 51.9%, including 57.1% in the second half. The Yellowjackets became just the second team to outrebound Hobart this season, finishing with a 35-30 edge on the glass.

The Statesmen will return to action one week from tonight, tipping off at St. John Fisher College at 7 p.m. Nov. 30.
