OSWEGO, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by Oswego 1-0 in a non-conference contest at the Deborah F. Stanley Arena & Convocation Center this evening.
Erin Murray started in goal and made a career-high 34 saves as she made her second career start for the Herons (2-7-0).
Ariella Haas scored for the Lakers (5-2-1). Joanna Hiebert started in the Oswego goal and made 15 saves as she logged her first career shutout.
The Lakers controlled the game's momentum right from the opening whistle. Oswego finished the first period with a 9-3 advantage in shots on goal. Ashlyn McGrath had the game's first scoring chance two minutes into the contest, but her shot was turned aside by Murray. The Lakers continued to apply the pressure in the offensive zone in the first five minutes of the period, but Murray and the William Smith defense kept the Lakers' attack at bay.
The Herons set up shop in the attacking zone in the closing minutes of the first period when Oswego's Morgan Shines was called for interference. In the closing seconds of the period.
Emily Martino fired a shot on goal from the slot that was turned aside by Hiebert.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second period. While Oswego held a 15-8 edge in shots on goal, both teams had chances in the middle frame. Just over a minute into the period,
Izzy Friedman had a shot turned aside by Hiebert. Two minutes later
Emily Rourke's attempt from right in front of the cage was turned aside by Hiebert.
In the middle stages of the period, Ariella Haas had the Lakers' best scoring chance. She deked around a defender and broke into the offensive zone, but her shot from the slot was stopped by Murray. Amanda Zenstein's follow-up attempt was also saved by Murray.
With two minutes remaining in the period,
Julianna Gong nearly opened the scoring for the Herons, but her shot from the right faceoff circle was stopped by Hiebert.
Five minutes into the third period, Haas notched the game's lone goal, burying a rebound past Murray. Her second goal of the season was assisted by Chyne Kennedy and Emily Gustafson. Kennedy's initial shot was blocked by
Elizabeth MacMurray, the puck fell to Haas' stick in the left faceoff circle. Haas wasted little time and fired the puck into the back of the net. Morgan Shines nearly gave Oswego a 2-0 lead. Her wrist shot from the right faceoff circle beat Murray, but hit the junction between the goal post and the crossbar and bounced harmlessly to the end boards.
With just over five minutes remaining,
Annabel Ziskin had a pair of shots from the slot blocked by Hiebert. The Herons pulled the goalie with just over a minute remaining in regulation in an attempt to tie the game.
Mia LaPlante had the best chance for William Smith with the extra attacker but her shot from right in front of the cage was stopped by Hiebert.
Emily Martino had a shot from the point blocked by Shines.
Oswego finished the game with a 35-15 advantage in shots on goal. Both teams were 0-for-1 on the power play.
William Smith will be back in action next Tuesday, Nov. 30, when it wraps up a five-game road trip against Morrisville. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
