GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team rallied for a 3-1 victory over Salem State in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this evening. With the win, the Herons are now 2-2-0 overall this season and 1-1-0 in NEHC play this season.
Brit Foster led the way for William Smith with two goals. Four other players recorded a point in the victory.
Erin Murray made her collegiate debut and played all 60 minutes in goal, making 21 saves.
Jessica Robert scored the goal for the Vikings (0-2-0, 0-2-0). Hannah Aveni played 59 minutes in goal, making 43 saves.
Salem State opened the scoring at the 6:28 mark of the first period. Robert redirected a shot from the point past Murray. The power-play goal was assisted by Breanna Greene and Abby Stafford. William Smith tied the game two and a half minutes later.
Brit Foster snapped a shot from the left faceoff circle past Aveni. Her first collegiate goal was assisted by
Ava Cornforth. Foster struck again at the 15:58 mark of the opening period. She broke up a clearing pass and snapped a shot from the high slot over Aveni's glove hand.
Neither team found the back of the net in the second period. The Herons finished the stanza with a 16-8 advantage in shots on goal.
Lauren Jackson fired a shot off the right goalpost with seven minutes remaining in the period. Salem State's Robert rang a shot off the pipe a few minutes later.
William Smith tacked on an insurance goal at the 2:34 mark of the third period.
Taylor Ettore snapped a shot past Aveni for her second goal of the season.
Elizabeth MacMurray and
Emily Rourke were credited with assists on the goal. A minute later,
Julianna Gong fired a shot off the goal post. The Herons turned up the pressure with a late third period power play, but they could not sneak another shot past Aveni.
William Smith finished the game with a 46-22 edge in shots on goal. Salem State was 1-for-3 on the power play. The Herons could not convert on either of their chances with the extra skater.
William Smith will be back in action on Friday, Nov. 12, when it welcomes Elmira to The Cooler. Faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
