Coffey’s OT tally sends Hobart past Skidmore 4-3

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.—Hobart College defender Blake Coffey scored just over two minutes into overtime to lift the fifth-ranked Statesmen past Skidmore 4-3 in a New England Hockey Conference contest at the Saratoga City Rink this evening. With the win, the Statesmen are now 7-1-1 overall this season with a 4-0-1 record in conference play.
 
Coffey patiently circled the net and beat Tate Brandon with a wrist shot for his second goal of the season. Jonah Alexander notched an assist on the goal. It was Hobart's first overtime victory since a 2-1 win over Oswego on Oct. 29, 2017.
 
Coffey led the way for the Statesmen with a goal and an assist in the victory. In total, ten skaters earned a spot on the score sheet. Joe Halstrom started and played all 62:03 minutes in goal for Hobart, making 27 saves.
 
Kaeden Patrick had a pair of assists for Skidmore (4-4-1, 1-3-1). Brandon started in goal and made 38 saves for the Thoroughbreds.
 
PA Martineau opened the scoring at the 9:33 mark of the first period. He redirected a Chase Bell shot past Brandon for his third goal of the season. Matthew Iasenza also notched an assist on the goal. Skidmore tied the game four minutes later on Matt Rutigliano's second goal of the season. He fired a shot from the point past Halstrom. Zach Frisk and Ethan Heidepriem were credited with assists on the goal.
 
Hobart regained the lead just under four minutes into the second period. With the Statesmen on a power play, Aaron Maguyon blasted a shot from the right faceoff circle past Brandon. His team-leading eighth goal of the season was set up by Artem Buzoverya and Reid Lindsay. Four minutes later, Jared Patterson gave Hobart a 3-1 lead. His first collegiate goal was assisted by Coffey and Brenden Howell. At the 9:09 mark of the second period, Skidmore made it a 3-2 game. Everett Wardle chipped a loose puck past Halstrom for his fifth goal of the season. Kaeden Patrick and Kyle Delmaestro notched assists on the goal.
 
The Thoroughbreds tied the game with a power-play goal at the 12:38 mark of the third period. Reid Russell deked a defender and slipped a shot across the goal line. Patrick and Will Dow-Kenney picked up assists on the goal.
 
Hobart had all four shots of the overtime period.
 
The Statesmen finished the game with a 42-30 edge in shots on goal. Hobart was 1-for-5 on the power play and Skidmore was 1-for-3 with the extra attacker.
 
The Statesmen will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 4 when it takes on Castleton. Faceoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
