2nd quarter run lifts Brewers over Herons

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.—Nineteen unanswered points in the second quarter propelled Vassar College to a 95-71 Liberty League victory over William Smith College this afternoon. The Brewers relied heavily on the 3-point shot, making 19-of-44 from beyond the arc, to improve to 2-0 in conference play.
 
Vassar outscored William Smith in all four quarters, holding a two-point advantage in the first, third and fourth frames. The outcome ultimately turned on the lopsided second quarter, which saw the Brewers outscore the Herons 27-9.
 
Vassar led 20-18 at the end of the first quarter with 18 of the Brewers points coming via the 3-ball. Vassar held a 25-22 advantage following Lauren DeVaney's jumper two and a half minutes into the second quarter. That's when the Brewers launched their decisive run, making 6-of-10 from the floor, including three 3-pointers, and 4-of-5 at the free throw line. Julia Harvey led the charge with seven points, including the final six. During the seven-minute surge, William Smith missed 14 straight field goals and five free throw attempts.
 
Vassar led 47-27 at the half. The Brewers' Dani Douglas led all scorers with 20 first half points, including six triples. Olivia Parisi led the Herons with 14 points.
 
Vassar (2-5, 2-0) maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half.
 
Parisi paced William Smith with a season-high 26 points, making 9-of-13 from the floor and 8-of-9 at the line. DeVaney finished with a double-double on 15 points and 11 rebounds. Brooke Jarvis also notched a double-double, recording 13 points and 10 boards.
 
Douglas led five Brewers win double digits, scoring a game-high 28 points with eight 3-pointers. Sarah Gillooly contributed a double-double on 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.
 
William Smith (2-3, 1-1) will take the next two weeks off for final exams. The Herons will return to competition Dec. 19-20 when they play in the Jamie L. Roberts Classic hosted by Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
