Madonna records career-high in OT loss to Hawks

GENEVA, N.Y.—Hobart College junior midfielder Derrek Madonna produced a career-high six points, but Saint Joseph's University remained unbeaten in Northeast Conference play, rallying for a 13-12 win in overtime. Sophomore attackman Levi Anderson scored the game winner 1:28 into the extra session.

Madonna scored a career-high four goals on just five shots and matched his career-high for assists with a pair of helpers. Senior attackmen Tommy Mott logged three points on two goals and an assist. Senior faceoff specialist Drew Blanchard held his own against the Hawks' junior Zach Cole, who came into the game winning nearly 70% of his faceoffs. Blanchard was 13-of-23 with a team-high six ground balls. Senior defenseman Sam Mueller matched his career-high with three caused turnovers. Sophomore goalie Kevin Holtby made 15 saves.

Senior midfielder Evan Campbell and sophomore attackman Matt Bohmer led SJU with four points apiece. Anderson finished with a hat trick. Cole was 14-of-28 at the X with a team-high six ground balls. Senior Tucker Almany made 10 saves.

Junior midfielder Bradley Simas scored his seventh goal of the season off an assist from Madonna with under seven minutes to go in regulation to give Hobart a 12-10 lead. Cole won the ensuing faceoff and senior long-stick midfielder Liam Hare scored his first goal of the season just 12 seconds later.

Drew Blanchard prepares to scoop up a faceoff win with Zach Cole laying on the ground behind him.

This time Blanchard won the ensuing faceoff and Hobart had a chance to restore its two-goal advantage. Mott took a jump shot from the left of Almany that beat the keeper, but hit the far post, ricocheted off the keeper's leg and landed in the crease to the side of the net. Saint Joseph's took advantage of the lucky bounce, scoring the tying goal with 4:24 left in the fourth quarter.

Both teams had opportunities to avoid overtime, but Hobart's last shot went wide and SJU had its own shot go wide and another turned back by Holtby.

In OT, Cole won the faceoff and the Hawks immediately called timeout. Holtby saved the first shot he saw in overtime and the next two were wide, before Anderson muscled his way into open space about 8 yards in front of the goal and fired a shot into the top right corner.

It's the sixth time in the past eight meetings between Hobart and Saint Joseph's that the game has been decided by just a single goal and the fifth time in eight meetings that needed overtime to determine a winner.

The Hawks used a three-goal run that spanned the first and second quarters to take a 4-3 lead. The Statesmen answered with six straight goals to build the largest lead of the game for either team, 9-4, with just over three minutes left in the half. Madonna scored three times during the surge.

SJU got one goal back before halftime, going into the break trailing 9-5.

The teams played the third quarter even, leaving Hobart an 11-7 lead. Campbell and Cole scored back-to-back goals 10 seconds apart in the opening seconds of the fourth to make it a two-goal game. Anderson closed the gap to one just past the nine-minute mark setting the stage for the dramatic finish.

Hobart will make its final road trip of the regular season on Saturday, April 17, when it visits Wagner (0-4, 0-6). The Hawks will stay on the road, heading to Bryant (5-2, 3-1) next Saturday.
