#19 Herons storm past Tigers, win 3rd straight

HENRIETTA, N.Y. — Senior Anna Murphy and sophomore Maddie Montgomery scored five goals each to lead the 19th-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team past RIT 16-11 on a rainy afternoon at RIT Turf Field. With their third straight win, the Herons are now 5-3 on the season with a 5-2 mark in Liberty League play.
 
Montgomery added an assist to finish today's contest with a game-high six points. It was Montgomery's fourth-straight game with four plus goals. Sophomore Molly Davis also had a hat trick in the win. Murphy had her name all over the stat sheet, scooping up a game-high six ground balls. She was one of four Herons with two caused turnovers. Davis won a game-high nine draws. Senior Mekayla Montgomery was right behind her with seven draw controls. First-year Maddie Bamberger played all 60 minutes in goal and made three saves.
 
The Tigers (6-3, 2-3) were led by Alanna Fallone, who scored four second half goals and won seven draws. Kayleigh Ground also had a hat trick for RIT. Rose Core had a game-high three caused turnovers in the loss. Paulina Goodermote started in the RIT goal and made 16 saves.
 
The Tigers opened the scoring just over two minutes into the game. Baylee West collected a feed from McKenna Joint right in front of the cage and fired a shot past Bamberger. Two minutes later, William Smith tied the game on junior Payton McMahon's 10th goal of the season. Mekayla Montgomery was credited with an assist on the goal, which started a 7-1 run for the Herons. Maddie Montgomery picked up her first goal of the game three minutes later. She dodged around a defender and bounced a shot into the cage. It was her 22nd goal of the season. McMahon gave William Smith a two-goal lead with her 11th tally of the season. Eighty-eight seconds later, Murphy notched her first goal of the game and 10th goal of the season. Kayleigh Ground interrupted the run with a free position goal. Montgomery and Murphy traded goals to extend the lead to 7-2 with 10:39 left in the half. The Heron's seventh goal of the game capped the hat trick for Montgomery, her fifth of the season.
 
Joint added a goal for the Tigers with 9:35 left in the half to make it a four-goal game. Two minutes later, Murphy completed her hat trick with a free-position goal. Senior Ellie Burns and Montgomery rounded out the half with goals to give William Smith a 10-3 lead headed into halftime.  
 
West started the second half the same way she started the first, with a goal. Her ninth goal of the season was assisted by Joint. Twenty-four seconds later, Murphy notched her fourth goal of the game off a feed from Davis. With 25:25 left in regulation, Kayleigh Ground pocketed a free positon goal to cut into the William Smith lead. One minute later Montgomery dodged around a defender and slipped a shot past Goodermote for her team leading 26th goal of the season. Davis scored her fourth goal of the season to pad the Herons lead. Fallone, who entered the game leading the Liberty League in scoring, finally found the back of the net with 21:03 remaining in the game. She beat Bamberger with a free position shot. Two minutes later, Fallone again converted a free position shot to collect her 42nd goal of the season. William Smith rattled off the game's next three goals to put the game out of reach. Davis scored twice to complete her first collegiate hat trick. Murphy scored the middle goal of the run to finish the game with a career-high five goals.
 
RIT scored the game's final four goals, all on free position shots. Fallone scored twice to complete her hat trick while Joint and Ground rounded out the scoring.
 
The Herons dominated the stat sheet finishing the game with a 41-17 advantage in shots, a 25-11 edge in ground balls and won the draw control battle 18-11. William Smith was 13-of-16 clearing the ball and the Tigers were 11-of-22.
 
The teams will complete the season series tomorrow, April 17, in Geneva, N.Y. Opening draw on Boswell Field is scheduled for 2 p.m.
