GENEVA, N.Y. —The second seeded Hobart College tennis was defeated by third-seeded Skidmore 5-1 in a Liberty League semifinal at the HWS Tennis Center this afternoon. The Statesmen complete the 2021 season with a 6-2 overall record.
Skidmore, who is 5-1 this season, will take on Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in the championship match on Saturday, May 8, in Troy, N.Y. The Thoroughbreds and Engineers have won the last six Liberty League championships.
Skidmore took a 2-1 lead in the match following doubles play. The Thoroughbreds won 8-3 in the No. 3 spot and 8-4 in the No. 2 spot. Senior

Jett Wright grinded out an 8-6 win in the No. 1 spot to earn Hobart's lone doubles point. Anderson and Wright finished the year with a 7-1 record, playing all eight matches in the No. 1 spot.
Skidmore closed out the match with three straight set singles wins The Thoroughbreds expanded their lead to 4-1 with wins at No. 6 and 5. Zachary Portnoy clinched the overall victory, winning 6-0, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot.
With Skidmore having clinched the victory, the other three matches went unfinished. At the time of completion, senior
Walker Anderson was up a set in his match in the No. 1 spot. He led Sergiu Celebidachi 6-2, 4-4. First-year
Winter Fagerberg was also leading in the first set of his match in the No. 2 spot 5-4. Because the match was unfinished, Fagerberg wrapped up his rookie season without losing a set, producing a 7-0 mark in singles play.
Today's contest was the final match in Anderson and
Jeremy Atwater's college careers. The Statesmen recorded a 36-18 record in dual matches in their four years on campus. Anderson was 34-23 in singles matches in his career and 48-26 in doubles matches. Atwater posted a singles record of 9-7 and a doubles record of 7-4.
