Keogh, Herons roll past Oneonta in opener

GENEVA, N.Y. — William Smith College senior forward Julia Keogh had a career day as the second-ranked William Smith College soccer team rolled to a 10-0 win over Oneonta on Cozzens Field this afternoon. Keogh factored into the game's first five goals, finishing the game with three goals and two assists.

The 10 goals by William Smith (1-0-0) were the most in a game since the Herons scored 10 goals against Skidmore on Oct. 2, 1999.

In addition to Keogh's offensive outburst, senior Amanda Adams had two goals and an assist. Senior Sheila McQuillen added three assists in the win. In total, seven different Herons found the back of the net and 11 found their way onto the scoresheet. Senior Amanda Kesler played the opening 64 minutes in goal and made a pair of saves. Sophomore Kirsten Nelson came on in relief and played the final 26 minutes.

Claire Lepper made 16 saves in 90 minutes in goal for the Red Dragons (0-1-0).

Keogh opened the scoring in the 11th minute. She collected a cross from McQuillen and slid a shot into the back of the net. Just over eight minutes later, Keogh doubled her total, running onto a lead pass from Janne Knieke and chipping a shot over the sprawling goalie.

The Herons applied pressure in their offensive end of the field right from the opening whistle, finishing the first half with a 21-1 edge in shots.

Senior Sarah Gray gave William Smith a 3-0 lead in the 48th minute, sneaking a shot inside the right post. Keogh was credited with the assist on the goal. Keogh completed her hat trick in the 50th minute.  McQuillen and Adams notched assists on the strike. Adams scored the next two goals for the Herons to increase the lead to 6-0. Keogh and McQuillen recorded assists on the game's fifth and sixth goals, respectively.  In the 65th minute, Knieke converted a penalty kick opportunity for her first collegiate goal.

Junior Seneca Blakely-Armitage, senior Sofie Varner and junior Emma Faso rounded out the scoring with three goals in just over seven minutes of game time. Blakely Armitage redirected a crossing pass from first-year Marissa Mastracco to extend William Smith's lead to eight goals. Five minutes later Varner notched her first collegiate goal off of assists from Faso and first-year Mercedes Wiegel. Faso's first William Smith goal came off a feed from junior Katrine Berg.

The Herons dominated the stat sheet, posting a 39-3 edge in shots and a 4-0 advantage in corner kicks.

William Smith will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 4 when they make the trip to Grantham, Pennsylvania to take on No. 1 Messiah. It will be a rematch of the 2019 National Championship Game. The game is scheduled to begin at noon.
