#8 William Smith blanks Alfred 6-0

GENEVA, N.Y.- The eighth-ranked William Smith soccer team scored four times in the second half as it cruised to a 6-0 win over Alfred on Cozzens Field this afternoon. With the win, the Herons are now 3-1-1 on the season and the Saxons fall to 3-1-2
 
William Smith was led by a pair of goals from Seneca Blakely-Armitage. Sarah Gray had a goal and an assist in the victory. Kirsten Nelson started in goal and made a save in the first half. Amanda Kesler came on in relief and played the second half.
 
Hannah Fuller played all 90 minutes in goal and made 13 saves for Alfred.
 
William Smith seized control of the game right from the opening whistle, finishing the first half with a 17-1 edge in shots. The Herons pressured the Saxons, keeping the ball in the offensive half of the field for the majority of the opening 45 minutes. William Smith broke the deadlock in the 25th minute on Sheila McQuillen's second goal of the season. She collected a rebound in front of the cage and buried a shot past Fuller. Nwabisa Qoba was credited with an assist on the goal. Blakely-Armitage doubled the Herons' advantage with a goal in the 36th minute. She collected a pass from Gray, dribbled into the box and fired a shot into the back of the net.
 
The goals came fast and furious for William Smith in the second half. Amanda Adams ran onto a Keogh cross and buried a shot into the upper half of the net 50 seconds into the half. In the 69th minute, Merilyn Hinrichs slipped a shot inside the left goal post from the penalty spot. Katrine Berg was credited with an assist on the goal. Nine minutes later, Gray added her name to the score sheet, finishing off a pass from Marissa Mastracco. Blakely-Armitage rounded out the scoring with her second goal of the day with 16 seconds left on the clock. Keogh was credited with an assist on the tally.
 
The Herons finished the game with a 32-2 edge in shots and a 6-0 advantage in corner kicks.
 
William Smith will wrap-up its four-game homestand on Saturday, Sept. 18, when they welcome Geneseo to Cozzens Field. The game is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
