#7 Herons tame Tigers 2-0, win fourth straight

ROCHESTER, N.Y.- The seventh-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated Rochester Institute of Technology 2-0 in its Liberty League opener at Tiger Stadium this afternoon. With their fourth straight win, the Herons are now 5-1-1 overall this season and 1-0-0 in conference play.
 
Amanda Adams led the way for William Smith factoring into both goals. Amanda Kesler made two saves in 90 minutes of action in goal.
 
Alyssa Salls and Darcie Jones each played 45 minutes in goal for the Tigers (4-2-0, 0-1-0). Jones started and made one stop. Salls came on in the second half and made eight saves.
 
Adams opened the scoring in the 31st minute. She fired a shot from the top of the 18-yard box into the upper left corner of the cage. Merilyn Hinrichs was credited with an assist on Adams' fourth goal of the season. Two minutes later, Hinrichs had a chance to double the William Smith lead, but her shot just missed the crossbar.
 
The Herons turned up the pressure in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Sheila McQuillen had a shot stopped by Salls. In the 55th minute, Salls came up big again stopping back-to-back shots from McQuillen and Adams. Six minutes later, Seneca Blakely-Armitage broke through for her fourth goal of the season. She collected a pass from Adams and slipped a shot inside the right goal post.
 
William Smith finished the game with a 26-9 edge in shots and a 5-2 advantage in corner kicks.
 
The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 25, when it returns to Cozzens Field for Homecoming and Family Weekend. William Smith will take on Skidmore at 3 p.m.
