Herons conclude road trip at Salem State, Southern Maine

The William Smith College ice hockey team is scheduled to conclude its five-game road trip this weekend, Jan. 14-15, when it takes on Salem State and Southern Maine. The Herons will faceoff against the Vikings on Friday at 6 p.m. and the Huskies on Saturday at 3 p.m.
 
William Smith is 3-11-1 overall with a 2-6-1 mark in conference play. The Herons enter the weekend tied with Johnson and Wales for sixth with nine points. William Smith is coming off a hard fought 3-2 overtime loss to then No. 7 Norwich last Friday. Mackenzie O'Neil and Lauren Legler scored the goals for the Herons.
 
Offensively, William Smith is led by Mia LaPlante and Emily Martino, who have six points each. LaPlante leads the team with four goals and Martino has a team-best four assists. Mackenzie O'Neil is right behind them with five points on two goals and three assists.
 
Amanda Aalto and Erin Murray have split time in goal this year. Aalto is 2-4-1 with a 2.75 goals against average and a .918 save percentage. Murray is 1-5-0 with a 2.77 GAA and a .928 save percentage.
 
Salem State is 2-10-0 overall with a 1-7-0 mark in conference play. When the Vikings take the ice, it will be there first game in a month. Carolyn Mahoney leads the team with five points on four goals and an assist. MacKenzie Mallett (1g, 3a) and Alexis Thomas (3g, 1a) are right behind her with four points each. Hannah Aveni and Kaia Hollingsworth have split time in goal. Hollingsworth is 2-4-0 with a 2.39 GAA and a .925 save percentage. Aveni is 0-6-0 with a 4.44 GAA and a .894 save percentage.
 
Friday's game will be the second meeting between William Smith and Salem State. The Herons won 3-1 on Nov. 6, 2021, at The Cooler. Brit Foster scored twice and Murray made 21 saves in the win.
 
Due to campus COVID policies, spectators will not be allowed at Salem State's Rockett Arena. Fans can follow all the action with live stats and video through salemstatevikings.com.
 
Southern Maine enters the weekend with a 7-6-0 overall record and a 5-3-0 mark in NEHC play. The Huskies are currently third in the conference standings with 15 points and are scheduled to host Elmira on Friday. Jess MacLean leads the team with eight points on a goal and seven assists. Four players are tied for second with seven points each, including Madison Chagnon who was a team-best five goals. Haley McKim has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 6-6-0 with a 2.09 GAA and a .932 save percentage.
 
Saturday's game will be the second meeting between William Smith and Southern Maine. The Huskies won the first meeting 4-1 on Nov. 5.
 
Spectators will be allowed at the USM Ice Arena. Fans making the trip to Gorham, Maine, must provide proof of vaccination or an acceptable negative test (within 72 hours) to enter the facility, negative tests must be administered by a qualified provider, at-home tests are not permissible. Children under five will be required to comply with a symptom check. Masks are required for all persons at Southern Maine's indoor facilities.
