Game Recap: William Smith Ice Hockey | | Mackenzie Larsen '12

Beacons nip Herons 2-1

GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by UMass Boston, 2-1, in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. The victory by the Beacons was the first by a visiting team in nine games in the series between the Herons and Beacons that dates back to 2014.

Laura Hill scored for the Herons (6-13-1, 4-8-1). Annie Hauser started her third straight game in goal and made 26 saves.

Rachel Burum led the way for the Beacons (9-10-0, 8-5-0), recording a goal and an assist in the victory. Victoria Kennedy stopped 36 of the 37 shots she faced as she picked up the victory and the season sweep of William Smith.

William Smith opened the scoring at the 3:56 mark of the first period. Hill wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle past Kennedy for her second goal of the season. Julianna Gong and Emily Martino registered assists on the goal. Gong had a chance to give William Smith a 2-0 lead four minutes later, but she had a pair of shots turned aside by Kennedy. The Beacons tied the game at the 17:19 mark of the period. Hannah MacDougall picked up a loose puck in the right faceoff circle and flipped the puck past Hauser. Burum and Liz Kramp were awarded assists on the goal. Corin Trejchel fired a point shot off of Kramp. The puck fell at Kramp's feet, and she kicked it to Burum, who slipped a pass to MacDougall in the faceoff circle.

Burum scored the game-winning goal at the 4:56 mark of the second period. She picked up a rebound and slapped a shot past Hauser for her fourth goal of the season. Jane Ann Drill and Melina Maggio were credited with assists on the goal. Emma Faso had a chance to tie the game at the midway point of the middle period, but her shot was stopped by Kennedy. In the closing seconds of the period, Faso also fired a shot off of the crossbar.

William Smith applied the pressure in the third period, outshooting the Beacons 18-6 in the stanza. Kennedy, however, stood tall to preserve the victory. Three minutes into the period, Mackenzie O'Neil fired a tough angle shot off of the left goal post. Laura Hill also hit a post later in the period. With two minutes left, William Smith called a time-out. They continued to apply pressure in the offensive end. In a flurry in front of the goal, both Faso and Gong had shots stopped by Kennedy.

William Smith finished the game with a 37-28 edge in shots on goal. Neither team converted on the power play. The Herons were 0-for-2, and the Beacons were 0-for-3 with the extra skater.

William Smith will be back in action next Friday, Feb. 4, when it takes on Castleton. Faceoff in Vermont is scheduled for 6 p.m.
