BUFFALO, N.Y.—The William Smith College volleyball team collected two wins on Saturday at the Medaille Tri-Match. The Herons recorded sweeps over Utica and Medaille this afternoon to bring their overall record to 12-4.
Sophomore
Elizaveta Telepova led the Herons, recording 23 kills on 32 swings between the two matches.
MATCH MOMENTS:
Match 1 (Utica):
- William Smith started off strong in set one, hitting .357 compared to the Pioneers .188. William Smith took set one 25-18.
- The Herons offense would continue to thrive in set two, recording 16 kills compared to Utica's eight. The back-and-forth action in set two would end in a 25-22 victory for the Herons.
- In set three, the Herons defense kept the Pioneers to a .034 hitting percentage and only seven kills in the set. The strong defensive efforts matched with an impressive offensive performance would lead the Herons to complete the sweep, taking the third set 25-16.
Match stats:
- Telepova led the Herons with 10 kills on 15 swings, hitting .600 on the match. First-years Jaylynn McCarthy (.385) and Malya Sayre (.148) both recorded eight kills for the Herons.
- Sophomore Elaina Wamhoff recorded 35 assists, five digs, five kills and three service aces in the victory.
- McCarthy led the Herons with 15 digs against the Pioneers, followed by Sayre with eight. Sophomore Ariana Angus and first-year Marin Montagne both recorded six digs in the win.
Match 2 (Medaille):
- The Herons came out firing in the first set against the Mavericks. William Smith hit .294 on the set, while keeping the Mavericks to a -.227 hitting percentage. The Herons took set one 25-9.
- Medaille would push back in set two, hitting .268 on the set but could not stop the Herons offense, hitting .308. The Herons would capitalize off Maverick errors and would take set two 25-21.
- William Smith's scrappy defense would adjust in the third set to keep the Mavericks to a negative hitting percentage (-.032) for the second time of the match. The Herons would complete the sweep, taking the third set 25-15.
Match stats:
- Telepova led the Herons with 13 kills on 17 swings, hitting an impressive .706 on the match. McCarthy (.200) and Sayre (.111) both recorded six kills in the win for the Herons.
- Wamhoff recorded 28 assists, seven digs, one service ace and one kill in the victory.
- McCarthy led the Herons with nine digs against the Mavericks. Sayre, Wamhoff and Angus each recorded seven digs in the Herons second match of the day.
