Maxwell lifts Herons over Vassar in OT

GENEVA, N.Y.— The William Smith College field hockey team recorded its second overtime victory this week, with a 1-0 win over Vassar this afternoon. The Herons now sit at 12-2 on the season and 4-1 in the Liberty League.

Junior Libby Maxwell recorded the game-winning-goal in the 64th minute to lift the Herons over the Brewers.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • Vassar controlled the first 45 minutes of the game, outshooting the Herons 8-0 and leading the penalty corner count, 5-1.
  • The Herons first shot of the game came in 46th minute. Senior Mary Kate Breward ripped a shot from the top of the arc off a penalty corner but would be blocked by a Brewer defender.
  • The back-and-forth battle between the Herons and the Brewers would force overtime to decide the game.
  • The Herons would come out firing in overtime, recording three shots to start the period.
  • Just 3:44 into overtime, the Herons would find the back of the net off the stick of Maxwell. Mantione beat a defender on the endline and put a pass across the net, finding Maxwell, who fired the shot home to seal the victory for the Herons.
  • Junior Kristen McCormick recorded three saves in the win, recording her sixth shutout of the season.
  • Senior Lauren Jackson recorded two defensive safes to help keep the Brewers off the board.
COACHES CORNER:
"Our entire team played tough defense today against a very strong Vassar team," Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07 said. "Lauren made a few big defensive saves, Kristen was strong in goal and Cora Nagle was very steady in her flying position on corner defense. We remained determined and tough throughout regulation. While we started the overtime a player down, we maintained possession and were confident as we applied pressure in the attacking zone. It was an exciting finish with Libby putting it away in overtime!"

UP NEXT:
The Herons will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 21, when they host Union in a Liberty League showdown at 4:30 p.m.
