Herons close out regular season with 2 nonconference matchups

The William Smith College field hockey team will close out its regular season this week with two nonconference matchups. The Herons will host No. 17 Hamilton on Wednesday, Oct. 26, at 6 p.m. and then head to Grantham, Pennsylvania, to take on No. 8 Messiah on Saturday, Oct. 30, at noon.

Fans who cannot make it to McCooey Field on Wednesday, can follow the action with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).

ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • William Smith enters the week 13-3 overall.
  • First-year Lily Gutch was named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week and sophomore Rebecca Mantione was named to the honor roll after last week's performances.
  • Mantione scored the game-winning-goal in a 3-2 win over Union on Friday, to clinch a Liberty League playoff berth for the first time since 2017.
  • Graduate student Emily Leonard leads the team with 29 points on 13 goals and three assist, followed by junior Sofia Pattillo with 23 points on 10 goals and three assists.
  • Junior goalie Kristen McCormick is 10-2 on the season, recording a 0.90 GAA, .745 save percentage and six shutouts.
ABOUT THE CONTINENTALS:
  • Hamilton enters the week 8-6 overall.
  • The Continentals are currently No. 17 in the NFHCA national rankings
  • Tracey Stafford leads the team with 15 points on seven goals and one assist.
  • Abby Griffin leads the Continentals in goal. She is 8-6 with a 1.77 GAA and a .680 save percentage.
ABOUT THE FALCONS:
  • Messiah enters the week 12-2 overall.
  • The Falcons are currently No. 8 in the NFHCA national rankings.
  • Messiah will host Lebanon Valley on Wednesday, before hosting the Herons on Saturday.
  • Ashlyn Smith leads the team heading into the week, with 35 points on 13 goals and nine assists.
  • Catie Brubaker leads the Falcons in goal, posting a 9-2 record. She currently has a 1.19 GAA and a .773 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Wednesday's matchup will be the 43rd meeting between the Herons and the Continentals.
  • The Herons lead the series 31-9-2, with a 15-4-1 edge in Geneva.
  • In their last meeting on Sept. 22, 2021, Hamilton defeated William Smith 3-1 in Clinton.
  • Saturday's matchup will be the 26th meeting between the Herons and the Falcons.
