Trailblazing 2012 Football Statesmen returning to The Boz

10/27/2022 11:34:00 AM

The record-breaking 2012 Hobart College football team will return to Boswell Field at David J Urick Stadium Saturday, Oct. 29 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their historic run to the NCAA quarterfinals. The current Statesmen host Union College in a Liberty League matchup set to kick off at 1 p.m. The 2012 team will be recognized at halftime.

Hobart began the 2012 season ranked No. 22 in the D3football.com preseason poll. The Statesmen shut out Dickinson 31-0 in the season opener and won each of its three non-conference games by at least three scores. When league play began, the Statesmen didn't slow down, running their record to 7-0 with an average margin of victory of 27.7 points.

Hobart faced its stiffest challenge of the regular season when it welcomed Union to Boswell Field on Oct. 27. The Statesmen built a 21-0 lead and carried a 28-7 advantage into halftime, but the Dutchmen refused to go quietly, cutting Hobart's lead to eight three times in the second half. After Union scored to make it a 42-34 game with 4:37 remaining, the Statesmen offense was able to run out the clock.

Comfortable wins at St. Lawrence and at home on Senior Day over Rochester gave Hobart the Liberty League Championship and a perfect 10-0 regular season, the first 10-win season in program history.

The Statesmen entered the NCAA postseason ranked No. 7 in both the AFCA and D3football.com polls. Hobart enjoyed home-field advantage in the first two rounds of the NCAA playoffs, taking out Washington & Lee 38-20 and No. 13 Wittenberg 35-10. The win over the Tigers sent the Statesmen to the quarterfinal round in St. Paul, Minnesota, where they ultimately fell to No. 3 University of St. Thomas.
