GENEVA, N.Y.—The fifth-ranked Hobart College hockey team cruised to a 7-2 victory over Potsdam in a non-conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. The Statesmen scored four goals in the third period as it improved to 2-0-0 on the season.
Jonah Alexander (1g, 2a) led the way for Hobart, recording three points.
Matthew Iasenza notched a pair of goals in the victory.
Mavrick Goyer made his collegiate debut in goal and made 19 saves. Connor Green started in goal and made 18 saves in just under 45 minutes in goal. Stephen Friedland made the final eight saves.
KEY STATS:
- The Statesmen finished the game with a 33-21 advantage in shots on goal.
- Hobart held the Bears (0-1-0) scoreless on its three power-play attempts.
- Including Alexander and Iasenza, four Statesmen finished the contest with multi-point games.
1ST PERIOD:
- Hobart applied pressure in the offensive zone right from the opening whistle. The Statesmen nearly took a 1-0 lead at the 3:11 mark of the first period, but Green made a glove save on a Zach Tyson shot.
- Hobart opened the scoring at the 18:25 mark of the opening frame. Iasenza ripped a shot off of the left goalpost and into the back of the net. His first goal of the season was assisted by Artem Buzoverya.
2ND PERIOD:
- The Statesmen doubled their lead at the 4:04 mark of the second period. Alexander snapped a shot past Green for his second goal of the year.
- Hobart took a 3-0 lead at the 7:53 mark of the middle frame. Shane Shell fired a shot into the back of the net. His goal was assisted by Luke Aquaro and Jonah Alexander.
- Potsdam ended the shutout bid late in the second period. Mason Hoehn beat Goyer from the right faceoff circle. Michael McArthur and Carter Lennon were awarded assists on the goal.
3RD PERIOD:
- The Statesmen put the game out of reach with four goals in the first five minutes of the third period.
- Cooper Swift notched his first career goal to start the flurry. He blasted a shot from the left faceoff circle past Green. Alexander and Shell notched assists on the goal.
- Just over one minute later, Tanner Daniels, pocketed his first collegiate goal, an unassisted tally.
- Iasenza added his second goal of the game at the 3:13 mark of the third period. Buzoverya and Tyson were credited with assists on the goal.
- Brenden Howell made it 7-1 Hobart with his first goal of the season. Daniels was awarded an assist on the goal.
- Justin Vernace rounded out the scoring. His first goal of the season was assisted by Jack Ludwig.
COACH'S CORNER:
"I am certainly happy with the outcome of the game tonight," Head Coach
Mark Taylor said. "We were definitely the favored team, but the guys took care of business the way they should. The best part was I thought we played our brand of hockey throughout the game, with full effort and complete character and were group strong."
UP NEXT:
Hobart will be back in action next Friday, Nov. 4, when it welcomes Babson to The Cooler. The New England Hockey Conference opener for both teams is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
