Herons fall at #8 Messiah

GRANTHAM, Pa. —The William Smith College field hockey team fell 4-0 at No. 8 Messiah this afternoon to conclude its regular season. The Herons fall to 14-4 on the season as the Falcons move to 14-2.
 
Senior Mary Kate Breward led the Herons with two shots in the loss.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • After 22 scoreless minutes, the Falcons got on the board courtesy of Makayla Malcolm.
  • Malcolm would breakthrough again less than 10 minutes later to extend the lead to two for the Falcons. Jenna Lutz would be credited with the assist.
  • The Herons pushed for a response, recording two shots before the half but would be denied by a strong Falcon defense.
  • Just 1:56 into the second half, Messiah would extend the lead to three. This time off the stick of Lauren Seubert.
  • Just over two minutes later the Herons would be awarded a penalty corner. Sophomore Rebecca Mantione ripped a shot off but would be blocked by a Falcon defender.
  • Mallory Kline would close out the scoring for the Falcons at the 54:16 mark to secure the 4-0 victory.
  • Junior Kristen McCormick played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons, recording six saves in the loss.

COACHES CORNER:

"Today the Herons faced a very strong opponent in Messiah," Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07 said. "It was a good test for us entering the Liberty League tournament to play a top team in the country. We played a good game overall and was a great first half. We have a lot to build from and look forward to the Liberty League tournament."

William Smith will be back in action Saturday, Nov. 4, when they head to Ithaca to take on the Bombers in the Liberty League semifinals at 4 p.m.
