MORRISVILLE, N.Y.—The William Smith College hockey team opened its 2022-23 season with a 1-1 tie at Morrisville State's IcePlex this afternoon. The Herons are now 6-1-1 all-time in season openers.
Annie Hauser played all 65 minutes in goal for William Smith and made 27 saves. Emma Plett went the distance in goal for the Mustangs and made 30 saves.
KEY STATS:
- The Herons finished the game with a 31-28 edge in shots on goal.
- Neither team converted on their power play attempts. William Smith was 0-for-3 and Morrisville was 0-for-1 with the extra skater.
1ST PERIOD:
- Morrisville jumped out to a 1-0 lead a mere 44 seconds into the game. Allie Davidson slipped a shot from inside the left faceoff circle past Hauser. Lilly Trevors was awarded an assist on the goal.
- William Smith swung momentum in its favor, outshooting the Mustangs 11-2 in the opening frame.
- Plett was up to the task, stopping several golden scoring opportunities.
2ND PERIOD:
- Neither team found the back of the in the second period. The Herons held a 14-9 advantage in shots in the frame.
3RD PERIOD:
- William Smith tied the game at the 7:05 mark of the third period. Kelly Howe wristed a shot from the low slot past Plett for her first collegiate goal. Emily Cataldo recorded an assist on the goal.
- The Mustangs gained momentum as the period went on, but Hauser saved her best for last, making 14 saves in the third period.
