GENEVA, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team defeated Nazareth 6-0 after a second half offensive surge by the Herons. After a scoreless 37 minutes, the Herons offense erupted, scoring six goals in the final 23 minutes. William Smith now sits at 9-2 on the season after a successful Wednesday night at McCooey Field.
The Herons outshot the Golden Flyers 43-2 in the nonconference showdown. Leading the way for the Herons was senior
Lauren Jackson with two goals on two shots.
MATCH MOMENTS:
- The Herons opened the scoring with 7:49 left in the 3rd quarter. Jackson broke the deadlock off of a defection from a shot by junior Libby Maxwell.
- Jackson secured her second goal of the game off a penalty stroke with 13:56 left in the 4th quarter.
- The Herons struck again with 6:02 left in the game. This time off the stick of sophomore Rebecca Mantione, who ripped a shot from the top of the arc, beating Lauren Bachner for the third goal of the game.
- Less than a minute later, Maxwell grabbed a goal of her own after a scramble in front of the net.
- With 3:49 left in the game, the Herons were awarded a penalty stroke for the second time. Junior Sofia Pattillo converted to record her eighth goal of the season.
- Just over a minute later, senior Mackenzie Wodka closed out the scoring for the Herons after slipping the ball past Bachner on the far post.
- Junior Kristen McCormick played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons, recording one save.
COACHES CORNER:
"Nazareth played some very tough defense with great goalkeeping tonight," said Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07. "They made us really work hard in the attack circle. We stayed focused on the process and possessed the ball very well. We adjusted how we attacked the circle in the fourth quarter and were able to put the ball in the back of the net a few more times. "

The Herons will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 8, as they welcome Skidmore to McCooey Field in a Liberty League showdown. The game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
