BRACE YOURSELF: DiMenna, Faso score twice in win over Cardinals

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.—Seniors Julia DiMenna and Emma Faso each scored twice as the fifth-ranked William Smith College soccer team defeated Plattsburgh State 6-2 in a non-conference contest at the Cardinal's Field House Soccer/Lacrosse Complex this afternoon. With its fifth-straight win, the Herons are now 9-1-2 on the season.
 
Faso, a transfer from Plattsburgh, and DiMenna shared game-high honors with five points each. Kirsten Nelson and Amanda Kesler each played 45 minutes in goal for William Smith. Lauren Haley made seven saves in goal for Plattsburgh (7-5-1).
 
KEY STATS:
  • William Smith finished the game with a 19-9 advantage in shots and a 4-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • Today's game was Faso's second two-goal game in the last three matches. She leads the Liberty League with eight goals this season.
 
FIRST HALF:
  • DiMenna opened the scoring in the ninth minute. She bounced a shot from the top of the 18-yard box past Haley for her third goal of the year. Shayna Straney was awarded an assist on the goal.
  • DiMenna extended William Smith's lead to two goals with her fourth goal of the year. She collected a leading pass from Katrine Berg and slipped a shot into the lower left corner of the cage.
  • In the 30th minute, Sam Spear snapped William Smith's four-game shutout streak with her second goal of the year. Off a corner kick, she headed a shot off the right goalpost and into the net.
  • Julia Berg gave the Herons a 3-1 lead in the 44th minute. She cleaned up a loose ball in the box for her third goal of the year. Ella Reish notched an assist on the goal.
  • Just under a minute later, Zoe Rice pocketed her first goal of the season chipping a shot from the right wing over the goalie's hands and into the net.
 
SECOND HALF:
  • William Smith pulled away in the second half, outshooting Plattsburgh 11-3 in the final 45 minutes.
  • Faso factored into all three goals in the second half for William Smith. She pocketed her first goal of the game in the 54th minute, burying a cross from Ireland Krawczyk for her seventh goal of the year.
  • Nine minutes later, she buried a rebound past Hayley. DiMenna was credited with an assist on the goal.
  • Seneca Blakely-Armitage rounded out the scoring in the 66th minute. Her third goal of the season was assisted by Faso.
 
COACH'S CORNER:
"It was a good weekend for us in the 'North Country," Head Coach Aliceann Wilber said. "We played two opponents who posed different challenges for our women to work out because of personnel or game tactics."
 
UP NEXT:
William Smith will be back in action next weekend, Oct. 14-15, when it heads to the Capital Region to take on Union and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Both games are scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
