Golden Eagles hold off Statesmen 71-67

BROCKPORT, N.Y.—The SUNY Brockport basketball team built an eight-point lead with six minutes remaining and held off Hobart College down the stretch for a 71-67 non-conference victory tonight. The Golden Eagles improved to 2-1, while the Statesmen slipped to 2-2.

Hobart had three players reach double digits, led by seniors Andrew Lynch and Patrick Walker, who both contributed 14 points. Senior Jackson Meshanic logged his third consecutive double-double on 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. He also shared game-high honors with four assists with sophomore Aidan Rodgers.

Brockport put four players in double figures led by David Grady's game-high 21 points.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • A close game from start to finish, neither team led by more than eight points.
  • The Statesmen used a 7-2 run early in the first half to take their largest lead of the game, 20-14. Rodgers started the surge with a 3-pointer. After a bucket by the home team made it a two-point game, graduate student Evan Goldberg made back-to-back layups for the six-point edge.
  • From that point, the game was tied five times before the half. Meshanic converted a traditional 3-point play to close out the first half scoring with Hobart in front 33-32.
  • Midway through the second half, the game was tied at 48. Brockport's Colby Jordan scored five straight, kicking off an 11-3 run. Jordan scored nine of his 11 points during the run that gave the Golden Eagles a 59-51 lead.
  • A 12-7 Hobart run, bolstered by three technical fouls against Brockport, allowed the visitors to get within three with 48 seconds remaining.
  • Mekhi Beckett's jumper made it a two-possession game. The Statesmen got it back to a one-possession game twice in the final 20 seconds, but each time Beckett (14 pts) scored to keep Brockport in control.

KEY STATS
  • Brockport shot 53.7% while holding Hobart to 32.8% shooting.
  • Hobart stayed close by making four more 3-pointers (5-1) and eight more free throws (20-12).
  • The Statesmen had a 37-34 edge on the glass and were plus-1 in turnovers.
