Beacons slide past Herons in OT

GENEVA N.Y.—The William Smith College ice hockey team was edged by UMass Boston 2-1 in overtime in a New England Hockey Conference contest at The Cooler this afternoon. With the loss, the Herons are now 4-3-1 overall and 3-3-0 in NEHC play. The Beacons are 4-2-0 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play.
 
Annie Hauser went the distance in goal for William Smith and made 22 saves. Leah Bosch made 31 saves in goal for UMass Boston.
 
KEY STATS:
  • The Herons finished the game with a 32-24 edge in shots on goal.
  • Neither team found the back of the net on the power play. The Herons were 0-for-3 and the Beacons were 0-for-1 with the extra attacker.
  • With a tie at the end of regulation, both teams earned a point in the conference standings. UMass Boston earned the extra point with the overtime victory.
 
THE WINNER:
  • Sydney Leonard won the game with 28 seconds remaining in the overtime period. Her shot from the left faceoff circle trickled through Hauser's legs and across the goal line. Mia Boyd and Emily Hansen were awarded assists on the game-winning goal.
  • The Herons finished the overtime period with a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
 
FIRST PERIOD
  • William Smith had a 10-6 edge in shots on goal in the opening frame.
  • Elizabeth MacMurray nearly opened the scoring six minutes into the game, but her shot was stopped by Bosch.
  • UMass Boston made it a 1-0 game at the 18:34 mark of the first period. Allie Reifler tucked a loose puck inside the right goalpost for her second goal of the season. Isabella Brown and Kristen Briggs were awarded assists on the goal.
 
SECOND PERIOD:
  • Mia LaPlante tied the game 1-1 with just under two minutes remaining in the middle period. She deked around a defender and wristed a shot from the right faceoff circle into the back of the net. LaPlante's third goal of the season was assisted by Kayla Ketchabaw and Lauren Jackson.
 
THIRD PERIOD:
  • Neither team found the back of the net in the final stanza.
  • The Herons had 12 shots on goal, but Leah Bosch was up to the task, making 12 saves.
 
UP NEXT:
William Smith will be back in action on Tuesday, Nov. 22, when it takes on Oswego in a non-conference contest. The opening faceoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
