Herons, Tigers meet in semifinal clash

The nationally-ranked William Smith College soccer team begins its quest for a 15th consecutive Liberty League title tomorrow, Nov. 4, when it takes on Rochester Institute of Technology in a Liberty League semifinal contest on Cozzens Field. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
 
The Herons, who are the No. 1 seed, enter the weekend with an 11-1-4 overall record. They locked up the regular season title with a Liberty League record of 6-0-3. The Tigers are 12-3-2 and are the No. 4 seed. RIT defeated Vassar 3-1 on Tuesday to advance to the semifinals.
 
Fans who cannot make the trip to Cozzens Field can follow the action with HWS All-Access and Live Stats. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).
 
ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • The Herons enter tomorrow's contest unbeaten in their last 13 games. They have recorded four straight shutouts and kept eight of their last nine opponents off the scoreboard.
  • William Smith is led offensively by Emma Faso's eight goals and 18 points.
  • Ava Ruppersberger is right behind her with six goals and 16 points. Ruth Hotaling has recorded a team-high five assists.
  • Amanda Kesler and Kirsten Nelson have split time in goal this season. Kesler is 4-1-3 with a 0.51 GAA and a .778 save percentage. Nelson is 7-0-1 with a 0.38 GAA and a .923 save percentage.
 
NATIONAL RANKINGS:
  • William Smith is ranked sixth in the United Soccer Coaches Poll and eighth in the D3soccer.com poll.
  • The Herons' defense has been among the nation's best all season. They are sixth in the country in shutout percentage (.750), ninth in goals against average (0.38) and 25th in save percentage (.867).
  • Individually, Nelson is seventh in GAA and save percentage.
 
ABOUT THE TIGERS:
  • RIT is led offensively by Sam Halligan. She has a Liberty League-best 11 goals, nine assists and 31 points.
  • Maddy Bullis and Madison Corso are tied for second on the team with 10 points each.
  • Darcie Jones has played a majority of the minutes in goal. She is 7-3-2 with a 0.69 GAA and a .765 save percentage. Emily Sanchez has started each of the last two games. She is 5-0-0 on the season with a 0.37 GAA and a .867 save percentage.
 
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Tomorrow's game will be the 46th all-time meeting between William Smith and RIT. The Herons are 43-0-2, including a 23-0-1 mark in Geneva against the Tigers.
  • William Smith has won 13 straight in the series.
  • On Sept. 21, the Herons defeated the Tigers 4-1 on Cozzens Field.
 
UP NEXT:
The advancing team from tomorrow's semifinal will take on either Ithaca or Clarkson in the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 6. The highest remaining team will host on Sunday.
