Fast start carries Hobart past St. John Fisher in hoops opener

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team opened the 2022-23 season with an impressive 88-65 win over St. John Fisher University in Bristol Gym tonight. The Statesmen put six players in double figures and shot 54.1% from the floor against the Cardinals, who received votes in the D3hoops.com preseason poll.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • St. John Fisher's Jack Foley made a 3-pointer to opening the night's scoring, but Hobart responded with 11 straight points and that led to a 19-2 run to take a 19-5 lead just over eight minutes into the game.
  • Then the Cardinals got five straight points from Brendan Trapper (15 pts), to make it a nine-point game, but the Statesmen launched an 11-3 run that included five points from Pat Healy and four points from Isaiah Washington for a 30-13 lead.
  • Hobart went into the break with a 41-26 lead. The Statesmen shot 53.1% from the floor in the first 20 minutes, while limiting St. John Fisher to 29% shooting.
  • The Cardinals turned up their production in the second half, shooting 50% from the floor, but Hobart improved its shooting as well, connecting on 55.2%, including 5-of-11 from 3-point range.
  • Hobart led by at least 15 and as many as 30 on their way to victory.

UP NEXT
  • Hobart will head to the Nutmeg State this weekend to compete in the Eastern Connecticut State University Tip Off Tournament. The Statesmen will play No. 5 Oswego State at 7 p.m. Friday. The host Warriors will play Anna Maria in the other semifinal.
