#7 William Smith runs past Oswego 11-3

GENEVA, N.Y.—The seventh-ranked William Smith College lacrosse team opened the 2022 season with an 11-3 win over Oswego State on Stiles Field in the Poole Family Sports Dome. The Herons have now won six consecutive home openers.
 
William Smith was led by Anna Murphy's game-high four points on three goals and an assist. She also had two caused turnovers and a game-high five ground balls. Payton McMahon, Maddie Montgomery and Maddie Schleicher all had two goals in the victory. Allie McGinty notched a pair of assists. McMahon had a game-high three caused turnovers and Molly Davis had a game-high four draw controls. In her first collegiate start, Maura Smeader made seven saves in 60 minutes of work. Six of her saves came in the second half.
 
Madison Davis (2g) and Logan Castiglione (2A) led the Lakers (0-1) with two points each. Three different players had two draw controls including Davis. Sarah Kamide scooped up four ground balls and made 16 saves in 60 minutes of action in goal.
 
Just over three minutes into the game, Madison Davis opened the scoring for Oswego with her first goal of the season. It was assisted by Castiglione. Two minutes later, William Smith tied the game when McMahon fired a shot past Kamide. Her first goal of the season was unassisted.  The Herons controlled the first quarter but could not sneak another shot past the goalie. William Smith also hit a pair of posts in the period.
 
Oswego took a 2-1 lead on Julia Quirk's goal five minutes into the second quarter. The Herons turned the game around, scoring the next five goals, including the final two of the first half. Murphy started the run with her first goal of the game. McGinty was credited with an assist on the goal. After hitting two more goal posts, William Smith took its first lead of the day on McMahon's second goal of the game. She fired home a free position shot from the top of the fan, giving the Herons a 3-2 lead at halftime.
 
Montgomery opened the second half with her first goal of the season. Murphy was credited with an assist on the goal. Four minutes later, Molly Davis pocketed her first goal of the season, converting on a free position attempt. It was a woman-up goal. With five minutes left in the third quarter, Montgomery beat a pair of defenders and bounced a shot past the goalie. It was an unassisted tally. Madison Davis ended William Smith's run with three minutes left in the third quarter. Sela Wiley was credited with an assist on the goal.
 
The Herons shut out Oswego 5-0 in the final quarter. Murphy picked up her second goal of the game with 8:24 left in regulation. Her tally was assisted by McGinty. Sixty-three seconds later Schleicher notched her first goal of the game. It was an unassisted goal. Murphy completed her hat trick with 4:26 left in regulation. The unassisted tally came a woman-up. Less than a minute later, Schleicher converted on a free position attempt for her second goal of the game. The Barnegat, N.J., native had one goal in 2021. Molly Davis wrapped up the scoring with a free position goal with 12 seconds remaining in regulation.
 
William Smith dominated the stat sheet, finishing with a 50-12 advantage in shots, a 24-12 edge in ground balls and an 11-6 lead in draw controls. The Herons were 18-of-19 clearing the ball and Oswego was 17-of-26.
 
William Smith will be back in action next Saturday, March 5, when it welcomes Geneseo to Geneva. The opening draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
