Hobart holds off Clarkson for 80-70 win

GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College basketball team posted an 80-70 Liberty League victory over Clarkson University in Bristol Gym this afternoon. Jackson Meshanic led the Statesmen with his seventh double-double of the season.

Meshanic recorded 20 of his game-high 27 points in the second half as Hobart held off a determined Golden Knights squad. He was 10-of-15 shooting and 7-of-8 at the line. On the glass, Meshanic grabbed a game-high 12 boards. Aidan Rodgers added 13 points, making three of Hobart's six 3-pointers. Chandler Owenby logged 10 points, including a pair of dunks, and six boards. David Corrales Marco chipped in a season-high seven points off the bench.

Clarkson also had three players in double figures led by Chris Hulbert's 21 points and eight rebounds. Blake Gearhart and Ryan Miles-Ferguson both contributed 15 points.

Hobart outrebounded Clarkson 42-35, made twice as many 3-pointers (6-3) and sank more free throws than the Golden Knights attempted (16-13).

Clarkson took its only lead of the game on a dunk by Teddy Fravel to open the day's scoring. The Statesmen tied it up on a hook shot by Meshanic at the other end of the floor. Hobart took the lead for good on a traditional 3-point play by Meshanic. The Statesmen raced out to a 10-2 lead as the Golden Knights went 1-for-9 from the floor in the first five minutes.

Miles-Ferguson's layup near the 12-minute mark got CU within six, 15-9. Hobart responded with six straight points and a 19-7 run that was capped by a 3-pointer from Matt Brand, giving the Statesmen a 34-16 lead.

Hobart headed into the locker room with a 40-23 halftime lead. Aidan Rodgers led all first half scorers with eight points.

Owenby opened the second half scoring with a steal and a breakaway dunk to put the Statesmen up 19.

However, Clarkson refused to go away, keeping things interesting. Midway through the half, the Golden Knights used a 10-2 run, including six points from Hulbert, to make it a 58-51 game with just over nine minutes left. CU got its deficit down to six on an old fashion 3-point play by Gearhart with 46 seconds left, but Hobart went 4-for-4 at the line down the stretch to close out the win.

Hobart (7-11, 4-7) will be back in action Tuesday, Feb. 7, taking on St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. Clarkson (5-15, 2-11) will return home to host the Statesmen on Wednesday, Feb. 8 at 1 p.m.
