GENEVA, N.Y.—The sixth-ranked Hobart College ice hockey team scored five unanswered goals as it rallied past Skidmore 5-4 in a New England Hockey Conference Contest at The Cooler this afternoon. The Statesmen erased a 4-0 deficit, scoring five goals in the game's final 36 minutes as they collected their 16th win of the season.
Austin Mourar and
PA Martineau had two goals each and
Chase Bell and
Luke Aquaro added two assists in the victory for Hobart (16-4-2, 11-2-2).
Jake Gresh added a goal and an assist.
Liam Lascelle started in goal and made 11 saves in 23:32 minutes in goal.
Joe Halstrom played the final 36:28 minutes and stopped all eight shots he faced.
Austin Rook led the way for Skidmore (13-9-1, 8-7-1), recording a pair of assists in the loss. In total, 10 Thoroughbreds recorded a point. Tate Brandon started and played 59 minutes in goal and made 37 saves.
Skidmore opened the scoring at the 10:34 mark of the first period when Reid Russell fired a shot from the high slot past Lascelle for his sixth goal of the season. Mike Gelatt and Rook were credited with assists on the power-play tally. Seven minutes later, the Thoroughbreds extended their lead on Devon Mussio's second goal of the season. While being tripped, he fired a shot through Lascelle's legs. The power-play goal was assisted by Kaeden Patrick and Rook. Zach Lindewirth gave Skidmore a three-goal lead when he banged home a rebound attempt for his second goal of the season. Danny Magnuson and Zach Frisk notched assists on the goal.
Hobart had its chances in the opening period, but Brandon stopped all 10 shots he faced in the frame.
Skidmore came out of the first intermission and quickly extended its lead to four goals when Callahan Johnson wristed a shot from the left faceoff circle past Lascelle. Johnson's fourth goal of the season was assisted by Freddie Macciocchi.
Following the Thoroughbreds' fourth goal, Hobart switched its goalie and turned the game's momentum in its favor. Not only did the Statesmen score the game's final five goals, but they also outshot Skidmore 29-8 in the game's final 36:30 minutes. Gresh started the comeback with his fifth goal of the season. He blasted a shot from the blue line through traffic and into the back of the net.
Artem Buzoverya and
Zach Tyson were credited with assists on the goal. Martineau scored the next two goals to bring Hobart within one. At the 13: 50 mark of the second period he snapped a one-timer past Brandon for his seventh goal of the season. Bell and
Reid Lindsay collected assists on the goal. Bell's pass took a weird bounce off of the end boards to Martineau's stick in front of the cage. Four minutes later Martineau blasted a slap shot from the slot into the net. Bell and
Aaron Maguyon set up the goal. While it was not a power-play goal, it came four seconds after a Skidmore penalty expired. Bell carried the puck below the net, drawing Brandon out of the goal. Bell slipped the puck to Martineau who fired the shot into the open cage.
Mourar tied the game a mere 79 seconds into the final period.
Jonah Alexander and Aquaro were credited with assists on the goal. Aquaro broke up a play in the neutral zone and passed the puck to Alexander. Alexander carried the puck into the offensive zone and slipped a pass to Mourar, who backhanded a shot from the low slot across the goal line. Ten minutes later, Mourar blasted a slap shot from the point into the upper right-hand corner of the cage. His seventh goal of the season was assisted by Aquaro and Gresh.
Hobart finished the game with a 42-23 edge in shots on goal. The Thoroughbreds were 2-for-3 on the power play and Hobart was 0-for-5 with the man advantage.
The Statesmen will be back in action next weekend, Feb. 11-12, when they conclude their regular season at New England College and Norwich. Faceoff in Henniker, New Hampshire is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Friday.
