#1 Adrian trips up #7 Hobart in quarterfinals

ADRIAN, Mich—The seventh-ranked Hobart College hockey team was edged by top-ranked Adrian 7-4 in a thrilling national quarterfinal at Arrington Ice Arena this evening. The Statesmen conclude the 2021-22 season with an overall record of 20-6-2.
 
Four different players scored a goal and eight recorded a point in the loss. Liam Lascelle started in goal made 14 saves in 40 minutes of action for Hobart. Joe Halstrom came on in the third period and made five saves.
 
Zach Goberis led the way for Adrian (29-1-0) with four points on a goal and three assists. Matus Spodniak (2g, 1a) and Zachary Heintz (3a) had three points. Cameron Gray played all 60 minutes in goal and made 24 saves.
 
Luke Aquaro nearly opened the scoring two minutes into the period with a shorthanded bid but Cameron Gray was there to stone the scoring chance. Adrian took a 1-0 lead at the 8:43 mark of the first period when Zach Goberis ripped a shot from the right faceoff circle into the back of the net.  Zachary Heintz and Matus Spodniak were credited with assists on the goal. Goberis nearly doubled the Bulldogs lead but his shorthanded bid was turned aside by Liam Lascelle. The Statesmen tied the game at the 15:09 mark of the period when Matthew Iasenza banged home a loose puck for his sixth goal of the season. Martineau was credited with an assist after his initial shot was blocked by an Adrian defender.
 
Just over a minute into the second period, Shane Shell had a great opportunity to give Hobart a 2-1 lead but his shot was stopped Gray. At the opposite end of the rink, Alessia Luciani slipped a shot between Lascelle's legs for his 16th goal of the season. John Kalijian and Ty Enns were credited with assists on the goal. Five minutes later, Sam Ruffin chipped a shot from the low slot into the back of the net. Ty Enns and Hunter Wendt were credited with assists on the goal. With 10:51 left in the middle period, Matus Spodniak gave Adrian a 4-1 lead. He one-timed home a shot from the left side for his 16th goal of the season. Goberis and Heintz tallied assists on the goal. Hobart cut the deficit to two goals with just under three minutes left in the frame.  Brenden Howell ripped a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle into the upper left corner of the cage. His fourth goal of the season was assisted by Dan Sliney and Mark Benemerito. Less than a minute later, Spodniak scored his second goal of the game snapping a shot from the right faceoff circle through a screen and into the back of the net. Goberis and Heintz were credited with assists on the goal.
 
Hobart cut into the Adrian lead just under three minutes into the third period. Aaron Maguyon cleaned up a loose puck in front of the goal and lifted it past Gray. His 15th goal of the season was assisted by Reid Lindsay. Rex Moe scored what would prove to be the back breaker with 17:20 left in regulation. He snapped a shot past Halstrom for his 17th goal of the season. John Kaljian and Luciani were credited with assists on the goal.  One minute later Jake Gresh notched his sixth goal of the season blasting a shot from the point across the goal line to make it 6-4 with a minute left. It was an unassisted tally.  Hunter Wendt added an empty net goal with 22 seconds remaining in regulation. Goeberis and Ruffin were credited with assists on the goal.
 
Hobart finished the game with a 28-26 edge in shots on goal. Hobart was 1-for-6 on the power play and Adrian was 0-for-3 with the extra skater.
 
Hobart's senior class, Chase Bell, Mark Benemerito, Blake Coffey, Jake Gresh, Joe Halstrom, Liam Lascelle, Aaron Maguyon, PA Martineau, Dan Sliney and Zach Tyson, finish their careers with an overall record of 61-19-7. They were 36-11-6 in New England Hockey conference play and were selected to three NCAA tournaments.
