GENEVA, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team defeated New York University, 7-2, in a non-conference contest inside Bristol Field House this afternoon. With their fourth straight victory, the Statesmen are now 8-4 on the season.
Hobart swept doubles play to take an early 3-0 lead in the match. In the No. 2 spot,
Troy Steiner and
Harry Lyu bested Joseph He and Andy Watterson, 8-2. Steiner and Lyu have won five straight matches and have a team-best 10-2 record as a duo this season. In the No. 1 spot,
Jett Wright and
Sean Pesin logged an 8-4 victory over Alex Yang and Zachary Freier. Wright and Pesin are 3-3 this season.
Hyat Oyer and
Guthrie Speers also won 8-4 in the No. 3 spot. They defeated Rumaish Khastgir and Shrey Arora. Oyer and Speers are 6-2 this season.
The Statesmen secured the victory with four singles wins. Steiner gave Hobart a 4-0 lead in the match with a victory in the No. 5 spot. He was leading 6-3, 4-2 when Watterson retired. With his fourth straight win, Steiner improved to 7-4 on the season. Lyu clinched the overall match with his win in the No. 3 spot of the lineup. He topped Joseph He, 6-2, 6-3, for his 10th win of the season.
Jacob Linares defeated Rumaish Khastgir, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), in the No. 4 spot. Linares is now 5-5 on the season. Oyer extended his winning streak to five matches with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Ryan Shayani in the No. 6 spot. Oyer is a team-best 11-2 in singles play this season.
The Violets (0-4) won matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 singles spots. Alex Yang rallied to beat
Winter Fagerberg, 3-6, 7-5, 10-7 in the closest match of the day. Zachary Freier won in straight sets in the No. 2 spot.
Hobart will be back in action next Saturday, April 2, when it takes on Rensselaer in Troy, N.Y. The match is scheduled to begin at noon.
