ITHACA, N.Y.—The Hobart College tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the Liberty League tournament thanks to a 5-0 victory over Union at Cornell's Reis Tennis Center. The Statesmen advance to the semifinals where they will take on No. 2 seed Skidmore tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
Third-seeded Hobart (16-6) took a 3-0 lead at the end of doubles play.
Harry Lyu and
Troy Steiner opened the match with an 8-1 victory over Dimitris Binopoulos and Ioannis Binopoulos in the No. 2 spot. With the win, Lyu and Steiner are now 15-7 as a doubles duo this year.
Jack Ledford and
Thomas Shung extended the lead to 2-0 with a win in the No. 3 spot. They beat Cameron Klepper and Nick Weitzman, 8-3. Ledford and Shung are now 8-3 on the season, playing all 11 matches in the No. 3 spot.
Sean Pesin and
Jett Wright knocked off Ben Jacobs and Aidan O'Brien, 8-4. It was the 11th win of the season for Pesin and Wright.
Hyat Oyer made quick work of Dimitris Binopoulos to give Hobart a 4-0 lead in the match. Oyer won 6-0, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot. With today's win, Oyer is now a team-best 19-4 this season, including an 8-1 mark in the No. 5 spot.
Jacob Linares clinched the overall victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Aidan O'Brien. It was Linares' 10th win of the year. He is the sixth Statesman to record 10 wins this year.
With Hobart having clinched the victory, the other four matches went unfinished. At the time of completion,
Winter Fagerberg was up a set in the No. 1 spot. He led Ioannis Binopoulos, 6-2, 3-3. Pesin had split sets with Cameron Klepper, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5) and Steiner and Ian Schunk had split sets, 6-1, 4-6. Schunk was up 1-0 in set No. 3. Union's Ben Jacobs was ahead 6-1, 4-3 in the No. 2 spot.
Hobart and Skidmore both finished Liberty League play with a 6-2 record. The Thoroughbreds earned the No. 2 seed and first-round bye thanks to a 6-3 win over the Statesmen on April 24.
