ROCHESTER, N.Y.—The William Smith College field hockey team fell 2-0 to the University of Rochester in it's first conference game of the season. The Herons now sit at 6-2 on the season with a 0-1 record in the Liberty League.

Friday night's matchup between the Herons and the Yellowjackets was evenly matched going into the fourth quarter. Both offenses turned on the pressure in the final 15 minutes recording eight of the 12 shots in the game. Junior Kristen McCormick played all 60 minutes in goal for the Herons, recording one save on the night.

MATCH MOMENTS:
  • Rochester would breakthrough in the 53rd minute thanks to first-year Anya Arseneau who tapped in a shot from one yard out off a pass from senior Karina Bridger.
  • Following the Rochester goal, the Herons would apply the pressure, earning two penalty corners resulting in five shots. Senior Mary Kate Breward led the way with two shots in the offensive burst. Senior Mackenzie Wodka, junior Sofia Pattillo and sophomore Rebecca Mantione all landed one shot during the late offensive push.
  • In the 57th minute the Yellowjackets would have a golden opportunity as Maeve Fogarty earned a breakaway after she gained possession of a mishandled back pass by the Herons. McCormick would deny Fogarty coming off her line and earning a nice save on the breakaway.

COACHES CORNER:

"While today's outcome wasn't what we set out for, it was a great defensive battle between both teams," Head Coach Sophie Riskie '07 said. "It was a very evenly played match and I'm very proud of our group. Our defenders Mary Kate Breward, Lauren Jackson, Kate Barilla and Cora Nagle played tough today. We look forward to being back on McCooey on Sunday against Elmira."
