Herons to face 2 foes this weekend

The William Smith College field hockey team will be in action twice this weekend. The Herons will head to the University of Rochester to begin conference play tonight at 5 p.m. followed by hosting Elmira College on Sunday at noon.

Fans who cannot make it to Edwin Fauver Stadium on Friday can follow the action with live stats and video courtesy of uofrathletics.com. Fans can follow the action at McCooey Field on Sunday with HWS All-Access Video and Live Stats. The game will be broadcast on WHWS-FM (105.7 in Geneva).

ABOUT THE HERONS:
  • William Smith enters the weekend with a 6-1 record after a 3-1 victory over No. 19 SUNY Cortland last Saturday.
  • The Herons earned two Liberty League weekly honors with graduate student Emily Leonard earning Offensive Player of the Week and junior Kristen McCormick earning the Defensive Player of the Week award.
  • Leonard leads the team with 19 points on nine goals and one assist. She recorded a goal and an assist in Saturday's win over Cortland.
  • Pattillo follows with six goals and three assists for 15 points on the season.
  • McCormick is 4-0 on the season in goal for the Herons. She has a 0.71 GAA and a .786 save percentage.
ABOUT THE YELLOWJACKETS:
  • Rochester brings a 6-2 record into Friday night's game. On Tuesday, the Yellowjackets defeated SUNY Oswego 2-0.
  • The Yellowjackets were picked to finish third in the Liberty League field hockey preseason poll.
  • First-year Maeve Fogarty leads the team with six goals and five assists for 17 points.
  • Sophomore Helen Schmitter has an edge in minutes played in goal. She sits at 5-2 on the season, bringing a 1.63 GAA and a .677 save percentage into Friday night's matchup.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • This will be the 57th meeting between the Herons and the Yellowjackets.
  • William Smith leads the series 42-14-1 with a 17-8-1 advantage for the Herons at Rochester.
  • Last season, Rochester topped William Smith 6-0 in Geneva.
ABOUT THE SOARING EAGLES:
  • Elmira enters the weekend with a 0-7 record after falling 3-0 to Houghton University on Wednesday night.
  • Senior Kylie Rosen leads the Soaring Eagles with two goals for four points followed by sophomore Katelin Bailey with two assists for two points.
  • Junior goalie MeganRae Burke is 0-7 on the season posting a 4.14 GAA and a .766 save percentage.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Sunday's matchup will be the sixth meeting between the Herons and the Soaring Eagles.
  • William Smith leads the series 6-0, with all six wins coming at home.
  • The Herons defeated the Soaring Eagles 7-0 in their last matchup on Sept. 7, 2021.
